5.0 out of 5 stars LG's BP250 is excellent value and highly recommended!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 January 2019
Bought this to replace a ten year old LG BD370 that was gorgeous but not only did it begin to be fussy with loading any discs, but it also stopped playing MKV files after a firmware update. I actually don't own any Blu-ray discs and only have a few actual DVD discs - over 99.5% of my TV and movie collection is downloaded in MKV, MP4 and DivX (AVI) and almost all new Blu-ray players play these formats so I wasn't needing anything powerful, just something that I could watch downloaded discs on.

Before I bought this, I chose the network version of this player (LG BP350) from Argos but found out it was Wi-Fi only and there was no LAN port on the back so decided to return it to Argos and opted for the BP250 instead as I really wasn't bothered about the network/streaming function anyway. If you do choose the BP350, at the time of writing this review, there is already a software update which I recommend you download on first installation. The only difference between the BP250 and BP350 is that the BP350 has the networking feature - other than that they are identical in look and size.

The BP250 is a very slick looking player with a cool cube textured effect on the top, front and sides - this is all plastic but it's rather solid and it gives the player an unusual look which I really like. Included is a simple manual (you can download a more detailed one from LG), warranty card, a universal voltage power supply and a small remote control that also covers power/input/volume on LG TVs. There's also a single AA battery for the remote - I can see the logic of including a battery but now they should be at least alkaline or rechargeable instead of the nasty zinc chloride ones that you get from pound shops.

The only controls on the front are power and open/close. A USB socket is included which allows playback from USB drives and external hard drives - please note that you will need to use the power supply for your external hard drive if it comes with one as the USB port can only output 500mA. The tray is underneath a small door that keeps dust out and there is just a single green LED for power - for disc status (chapter/track/time) you can view it on screen and this disappears after a few seconds.

After setting it up to my TV and adjusting a few features including the language to Mandarin Chinese, I played a few test files. It plays MKV, MP4 and DivX perfectly which is all I actually wanted it to do. I then tried the Region 2 release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and skin tones were excellent on my 42" LG and there was no noticable sync problems at all. I then did a test using an MP4 download of S.H.E's 2Gether 4Ever concert through the USB port and again it played flawless.

So in all, this is an excellent little player that will, with a few exceptions, play almost anything that you can put on a disc or on a USB drive. It's slick, fast loading, has excellent audio and video quality and the GUI is well designed. The only minor gripes are that the lack of a display might put some people off and the remote is a little small but it covers everything you need.

Do I recommend it? Yes, definitely!
