Product Description

The #1 Bestseller. A heartbreakingly beautiful love story by Australia's favourite new romance writer and author of the #1 bestseller Hooker: J.L. Perry.

Warning - Contains coarse language and sexual content. This book is recommended for 18 years and over.

My name is Carter Reynolds. I was born a bastard and I'll die a bastard. I learnt it at a young age, and nothing and nobody can change that. I'm on a one-way path of destruction, and God help anyone who gets in my way. I hate my life. Actually, I hate pretty much everything.

That's until I meet the kid next door. Indi-freakin'-ana. My dislike for her is instant. From the moment I lay eyes on her, she ignites something within me. She makes me feel things I thought I was incapable of feeling. I don't like it, not one bit. When she looks at me with her big, beautiful, haunting green eyes, it's like she can see into the depths of my soul. It freaks me the hell out. She's like sunshine and rainbows in my world of gloom and doom. I hate sunshine and rainbows.

I'm Indiana Montgomery. My friends call me Indi. Despite losing my mum at the age of six, I have a wonderful life and great friends. My dad more than makes up for the fact that I only have one parent. I'm his little girl, the centre of his world. I adore him.

When Carter Reynolds moves in next door, my life takes a turn for the worse. He's gorgeous, sinfully hot, but that's where my compliments end. He seems hell-bent on making my life miserable. He acts tough, but when I look into his eyes I don't see it. I see hurt and pain. To me, he seems lost.

I should hate him for the way he treats me, but surprisingly I don't. If anything, I feel sorry for him. I want to help him find peace. Help him find the light that I know is buried somewhere within his darkness, but he won't have a bar of it.

He's warned me time and time again to stay away, but I can't. I'm drawn to him for some reason. He's always referring to himself as a bastard. That may be true, but to me, he's more like a beautifully misunderstood bastard. Whether he likes it or not, I refuse to give up on him.

Carter and Indiana's story is told in dual POV, and in two parts, spanning over 8 years.

For its genre, this book was engaging from the start. Simply written, it had an honest punch to it. While I realise it's not up there with Pulitzer Prize winners, I felt it deserved 4.5 to 5 stars based on it's sincerity, and the following reasons.
The POV structure of the narrative was appreciated as I like reading both male and female viewpoints. The plot was well-thought-out and the pace was perfect.
The two main characters were so well-defined and relatable that they were easy to conjure up in my mind as real people. The imagery that was created through these two was spot on. Carter was determined to mould himself into his self-fulfilling prophecy of being a bastard (because of a stupid comment made by an equally stupid person that stuck with him as a child.) While bold and defiant on the outside, his self-worth=zero in his mind. By chance, he fell into the company of Indiana..a real sweetie who was well-adjusted and positive despite losing her mum at an early age. The challenge for him was to remain bitter and negative, even when she started breaking his walls down. BTW Carter's mum and Indi's dad were wonderful people who deserved better.
Anyway, from their beginnings in high school, there's a long journey to travel. I don't want to give anything away, so you'll need to read the rest of this gorgeous story yourself. If you enjoy reading about true love, soulmates, saddness, conflict, courage, changes, pain, overcoming hurdles, stepping up, perseverance and an HEA, this book is for you.

***nice to read a book from a fellow Aussie and read about a familiar setting***

Minor glitches...I don't think these are spoilers, but don't read on if you are concerned.

Jodi Perry has done it again with this fantastic story and start to a new series!
The title says it all- Carter is a true bastard, Indi is a lively, loveable young girl. Can opposites attract is the key question.
Jodi Perry has certainly built onto a terrific storyline with fabulous characters and settings, coming from Sydney I love the Harbour Bridge but even more so now!
Another character needs a mention too, JAX, oh he is a honey!
Friendship, loss, acceptance and much more is woven into this brilliant story, filled with wonderful descriptions of both characters and settings the reader can do nothing but enjoy the ride!
Can't wait for Jax's story!

'BASTARD' how can one word define a young boys life? Well it did for Carter Reynolds. A bastard in so many ways! This is a story about love, rejection, hurt, guilt, loss and trust. A story that will ignite all of your emotions in so many ways. You will cry, laugh, become angry, get frustrated and so much more. As Carter grows up he believes that he is not worthy and is just a bastard, (because at the age of 5 his estranged grandfather said so). The men in his life keep telling him that he is nothing. Except one man who believes in him and accepts him as he is. 17 year old Carter has attitude and doesn't give a damn about anyone except his beautiful mum. She has always been there for her son and loves him unconditionally. Carter meets Indiana Montgomery and things start to change. Feelings that he has never felt are triggered and he fights those feelings and wills them away. He makes a decision that will hurt so many people. Years later circumstances bring Indiana and Carter back together again. The spark is still there and he can no longer fight it. A beautiful story of love continually growing over time. This story deals with real life issues and how life can still go on!

J L Perry really knows how to capture her readers and she manages to take them on the journey. Her style of writing allows you to become the characters. This book is so worth reading and I certainly recommend it. Very worthy of a five star rating. Love it!
Thank you J L for being a fantastic story teller xx

FIrst time reader of this author so glad I've found her. This book is the story of how one comment can change the way you perceive yourself and the journey back. Damaged and angry is a lethal combination.

I loved this book I have seriously read dark troubling books for months. I enjoyed this for its light and humour. Love is dirty, complicated and so worth the fight.

This is a must read book. The book had me hooked as soon as I read what it was about and once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. The book follows the story of two characters Indie and Carter, which starts as them as teenagers. I love the fact that you get to see both characters grow.
I loved the relationship between the two and I love Carter. I loved the way the we slowly learn that Carter was just hiding behind his persona of being bastard to avoid being hurt. He was still feeling the pain of somethings that had happened to him when he was a child and throughout the story you see him coming to terms with what happened.
The book has everything that you want in a story; there was hot scenes, tearful moments, laughter and heartbreak.
I would recommend this book to anyone.
