Book 1 of The Watchers Trilogy
Paranormal Romance

Alone in snowy, remote Whistler village, Ana tries to build a new life since losing her parents. With a cozy condo, a sweet-faced bulldog and an evening job to leave the days free for the slopes, life slips into a great routine. If only she could shake the guilt for not remembering anything about her parents and banish the night terrors that haunt her every dream.
On a whim, Ana goes out with Athen, a guy she’s just met in the Grizzly Pub... The only problem is that she feels like she already knows him.
Within 48 hours of meeting Athen and his family, Ana’s world implodes. She falls for Athen quickly and before she knows it, a past life begins to resurface. As thrilling as the revelations appear at first, she fights against the chilling information that Athen is from the underworld. Soon she begins to struggle as her own supernatural gifts are slowly unveiled, and she realizes that the nightmares she’s been having might be premonitions and not dreams at all.
It is up to Ana to decipher between fact and fiction before it is too late, and her new love, Athen, follows in her same fate - one that is lost between two worlds.

REVIEWS

“The plot in Awakening is very intricate. There is an elaborate backstory and complex Nephilim lore. I found the take on angels really well thought out.” Giselle

“It was so different from the standard in YA right now that I am shocked to put it lightly. I really didn’t even see the ending coming and that cliffhanger, OH MY GOD!”

“Another thing I really enjoyed about this book is the author’s incredible use of imagery, from the snow on the ground and trees, to the crisp feeling of the cold air. Karice Bolton paints the most perfect holiday picture with words, making this a must read over the holidays.” Danielle

“I enjoy anything paranormal and a story about angels and demons is perfect. The suspense that is given through Ana’s dreams really kept me thrown off at wondering what is real and what was simply just a dream.” Heather

“Ana's emotions all make sense and feel very organic to her as a character, and early on in the book it was very easy to identify with her.” Kate(Urban Fantasy Reviews)

This was one of the best paranormal romance YA novel I have read in a long while. I felt Ana’s pain, her struggles with her past and her suppression of her supernatural abilities, I felt like I could identify with the longing she felt and the deep, crushing loneliness.

My heart pulsed with joy, literally, when she meets this handsome new man, Athen, I felt like he was right for her but everyone has secrets and will Ana be able to handle or cope with his? This is a mystery, and one to be discovered when you sink a bite into this delicious read.

Karice Bolton’s weaves her characters so beautifully they captivate your heart, mind and soul, she pulls you into this wonderful 3D fantasy world where you refuse to leave until the happily ever after has been read but not all stories have an happy ending. I totally enjoyed this book and I am a full-blown fan of this author, currently checking out what else she has up her sleeve, such wonderful work of fiction, my new addiction.

2.0 out of 5 stars (I kept getting bored, and I love angel romance novels) and I ... 28 April 2016

It took me forever to finish this book, (I kept getting bored, and I love angel romance novels) and I couldn't help thinking it was a tad much like twilight in a manner of speaking (not that twilight was bad, I enjoyed it actually) but felt like I was reading a angel twilight, and as others have said the MC girl was a bit too cool with everything happening to her (even before she 'awoken' at all). It was weird she was so calm in most parts others would have totally freaked. Too many details (and I love details) even down to the exact food they were eating. Dragged on, and didn't have enough action (or story progress) in my opinion.
I am not sure if I will not be too lazy to read the next book.
If you just like angel romance in general, give it a go.

4.0 out of 5 stars vivid and fantastic 12 July 2013
By Arianne - Published on Amazon.com

In a world where Angels are considered celestial beings, there were three unlikely angels who actually came from the Underworld.

Meet Ana. Mysteriously, she had no memory of her past. She didn't know her parents and she had no recollection of the events in her younger days, although there were some newspaper clippings that kept her at bay. She also often had nightmares where she saw a man being chased by monstrous creatures. However, she found solace in the diner where she worked as a waitress. Plus, there was Mathilda, her trusted bulldog companion.

One day, mysteriously again, there were some strangers that made her feel overwhelmed yet familiar. First she met Cyril and Arie, then soon she met and dated Athen. At first, I thought it was such a whirlwind romance. I raised my eyebrows when Ana readily accepted the three strangers' invitation to a weekend getaway. I was like, "wow, that was fast.. Really, Ana? In just two days?!..." This is the perfect example of a whirlwind love affair. But I still kept on reading until Ana, and I, learned that they were all angels of the Underworld. Or should I say, White Demons. They are the counterpart and enemies of the Black ones. Soon, reality set in and Ana learned about her powers and whatnots, and embraced the Nephilim in her. It is until I reached the latter part of the book when the bomb was dropped out of nowhere. The ending is definitely something to wait for.

Overall, I liked the story. It was kind of slow in the beginning, I thought, why should the trio of Athen, Cyril and Arie took their time in telling the truth about Ana. If I were in Ana's shoes, I may have already put handcuffs on the three and would not let them go until they told me everything. But then, that's just me.

Also, some grammar and typos are quite visible on the book, but I easily ignored these errors because I was entertained. I can't say much more about the author, Karice Bolton, except that she has a great storytelling techniques. Her vivid description of snow and everything else was fantastic. I look forward to reading the second installment, because as a rule for a bookworm like me, once I start a series, I will do my best to read all of the next. Here's my 4 star rating for Karice Bolton and Awakening. ****

4.0 out of 5 stars Good on Its Own, but Even Better After the Prequel 22 May 2013
By Tom Sanchez - Published on Amazon.com

Imagine you're a pretty, twenty-year-old woman waitressing in a ski village bar & grill. One night, you meet three people to whom you are irresistibly drawn, especially one tall, handsome guy with arresting green eyes. Eventually, they tell you the truth: they've been looking for you for 57 years.

Such is the situation Ana finds herself in. Up until she meets the trio--Athen (aforementioned hunk), Arie (Athen's sister), and Cyril (Athen's fiancee)--she's been reasonably content with her situation. She lost her family under circumstances she can't clearly remember, and her inheritance left her enough money for a nice condo in Whistler. She can ski, hang out with friends (though she doesn't have many), and treasure the time she spends with her bulldog, Mathilda.

She'd also starting having horrible dreams, with dark creatures tearing people apart. It took her awhile to realize that Athen--her hunk--was one of the victims.

Ana is introduced to the world of White Demons. White Demons, as you might expect, are the counterparts to black demons, who are evil and horrible. White Demons are more powerful; black demons are more common. These demons are all over the world--you've probably had a black demon screw up your change at a fast food drive-thru, or cut you off in traffic without signalling.

Okay. The black demons would probably do those things, but their main function is to create new black demons, to season these "minions," and occasionally attack the White Demons.

For Ana, it's not a process of learning all of this, but remembering it. Fifty-seven years ago, she was killed, and Athen, Arie, and Cyril have been searching for her the whole time, through several different incarnations. As Ana remembers, she begins to regain some of her old powers. One of hers was the gift of sight. Is Athen really supposed to be in danger, as her dream showed her? Or was it just a simple dream? If it's real, will Ana be recovered enough to save him?

This was a fun book to read, and a nice introduction to the world of The Watchers Trilogy. After the trilogy was over, author Karice Bolton went back, and wrote a prequel novella, Taken (A Watchers Novella) (The Watchers Trilogy), which gave us a sort of in medias res glimpse of Ana at her full powers, as well as leading up to the part where her soul is driven out of her body.

The prequel is a quick, satisfying book, and it gives you an idea of what their family does. You will, however, leave you with lots of questions regarding the series's mythology. "Awakening" answers all the questions.

In fact, it's really a nice literary device Ms Bolton uses. Because Ana has forgotten so much, the other three have to explain the whole system to her. While they do so, they're explaining it to the reader as well.

While there are some dark moments in "Awakening," it is mostly a tale of love rediscovered, and the joy of finding people you hadn't even known you were missing. By the end, we know Ana has found her true place in the world, and that she'll soon be ready to kick some black demon butt.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was a new genre of books for me when I read it 2 January 2014

This was a free book I picked up from Pixel of Ink for my kindle. Not knowing it was a series book, I got it. (Now they alert you that these are series book. I'll take credit for that since I made a suggestion!).

This is more of a teen book. It's not complex. It is was a super fast read. I had read it in a matter of a day and a half. (I have a family, so cooking, chores and life play a factor in my time).

This book takes you through the mystery angels verses demons. How the demons die, the angels get recycled. It is a good book. Not my first choice of books. But a good book. Warning... There are 3 books in this series!
