I was recommended this book by Mark Dawson (of Self-Publishing 101) as his covers for his phenomenally successful John Milton series. However, being a good cover designer doesn't seem to translate well at all to being a good teacher.
I get that this book is an intro to him selling his online course - but how can you have a book on cover design WITHOUT A SINGLE IMAGE.
That's right - no examples of good or bad covers, no examples of fonts that go well together or placement or colour contrasts that work well and at a really expensive price.
I learnt far far more from Derek Murphy's "Book Cover Design Secrets You Can Use to Sell More Books" for placement and general tips and loads about fonts and colour from "Ebook Cover Design" by Charles G. Koonitz.
This is without doubt the definitive book on book cover design — something that many people think is much easier than it really is. Stuart Bache has worked with some of the biggest publishing houses and authors in the world and is a highly revered cover designer. He’s also great at passing on his knowledge and this book is the ideal read for any self-published author, whether you intend to design your own covers or hire a professional designer. A highly recommended read.
This was quite a quick read, I got through it in a couple of hours, but it was full of valuable information for people wishing to self-publish. Topics range from writing a brief, choosing and working with a designer, to all the practical steps and resources needed to create your own cover design if you have the courage to do so. It even covers issues of copyright. This is a must read if you want a no nonsense, clearly written guide to give your book the best chance it can have at first glance. I'll be recommending it to others.
Stuart Bache is at the top of his game as a designer of book covers - he's worked with top authors from just about every genre - and his book is written in a very readable, easy-to-follow and understand style. Once you've read this, you'll either know enough to design your own book cover or, as I'll do, leave that to a top designer like Stuart.
Stuart Bache has been instrumental in my publishing success, no question. With his insight and depth of knowledge around cover design, I have been able to learn what will work in my genre and use that knowledge with confidence. I have gone from no knowledge of cover design to having brilliant covers that sell my books and its in large part thanks to Stuart. In his book he sets out the fundamentals and the practical information - its not only the perfect tutorial, but its also a framework and reference guide that I know I'll come back to with each book I publish.
If you are an author, you need this book. It’s the type of guidance any author needs for planning their cover. Whether you plan to do it yourself or hire someone, you need to have this book to give it the care and consideration required to not fail. Seriously, save yourself the rubbish book covers in advance and GET THIS BOOK!!!!
This book is really well put together and has a plethora of information about cover design. Whether you are designing your own cover, which is what i'm doing or just understanding the professional process. This book is worth 5 stars but there were no visual examples and I think that would be helpful. But I highly recommend this book if you are designing a cover.
