I can go in depth about the positives of August and their lock, but I am going to just focus on the biggest red flag that all potential buyers need to be aware of as it applies to all of their locks:
If your lock dies after the 1 year warranty expires, your ONLY option is to purchase a new one. August has no repair service as of the time of this review. They offer a modest 20% off coupon to their online store as an apology for your broken lock. Their online store happens to sell their products for full MSRP, so savings are much less than 20% when comparing their Amazon price to their official online store price + their apology coupon (~7% in saving when all is said and done, without 2 day shipping). They don't request that you send your broken lock back, so all the materials and electronics go to waste (I try to be mindful of reducing waste, so this upsets me).
To be clear, the product feels premium and I have barely had any issues with their 3rd generation offering. However, the lack of repair options + wastefulness with broken materials makes me not want to recommend this purchase. It is just too expensive to consider a disposable product (which the company implies it is after one year), and, at least in my opinion, not worth the money. I sincerely hope they address how they manage broken products, but until they do, I cannot recommend August or their products.
You don't need to change the outside of the lock, which is a very big plus. Nobody who hasn't been inside your house will know you have one. There is no reason for anyone to try to hack it.
The sensor to determine if the door is closed is a big plus. That way you know if you are locking an open door remotely. It could probably be hooked up to an alarm system, but I haven't tried it.
Alexa can lock the locks directly, but not (yet) through a Smartthings scene or routine (even though it goes through SmartThings to lock locks directly if that makes sense (it doesn't)). I assume that this will be fixed by Amazon at some point. Alexa can't unlock the door at all, which is a security feature.
Overall, the lock is bigger than I pictured it being (think Echo Dot on your door). The size and weight of the lock gives it a nice heft when you turn it manually. It is pricey, but in my case my wife doesn't lock doors before going to bed, and I wanted something that could lock the doors automatically. That is priceless.
The iPhone app works, but I don't care for it much.
UPDATE. Its been a month. I have request a refund through the better business bureau
I tried to install it anyways which was a pretty easy process but once I got to the step that required the lock to link to the app, I was given an error. The lock had a previous owner and needed to be factory reset. Not a problem right? I can do this myself. Nope. The factory reset is done through the app which only works when you have the lock already set up on your phone. I called the manufacturer so they could factory reset the lock.
After a 15 minute call and an email (they required proof of purchase and picture of the Serial number) I was told they were busy and would call be back once it was reset. About 10 minutes later they called back telling me the lock had been reset. I was finally able to finish the set up process. What was supposed to be an easy setup and installation turned into a huge hassle because of Amazon.
All that being said, we love our August lock so far and they were very helpful throughout the whole ordeal.
I love the auto lock feature.
I would love the auto-unlock feature if it were smart enough to tell when I was at the door.
Remotely using the device is pointless. You don’t get the notifications unless you use something like IFTTT perhaps or are close to the device...even with the August connect, which should be unnecessary in today’s IoT world. It should have built-in 802.11 functionality.
But, it excels well as a stylish lock. It is very easy to install (for the most part).
