Lily King fans will love it

After reading Writers & Lovers, Euphoria and Father of the Rain by Lily King, I fell completely in love with this woman. I don't know how, but she manages to process great emotional topics such as grief, longing, love and self-acceptance without much drama and kitsch. November last year, King's first short stories "Five Tuesdays in Winter" were published. The protagonists, motifs and themes are similar to their novels. Writing itself, the role of women, puberty and identity finding, dysfunctional families and generally interpersonal relationships appear again and again in the individual stories. I didn't like all the stories, but 3-4 have settled sustainably in my head and heart. So much so that I would have liked a whole novel from them. I really love the cover story about an introverted bookseller and single father who falls in love with an employee.

In summary, not a 5-star book for me but definitely something for Lily King fans. And besides, I'm kind of into this supercheesy cover.

I am a person who appreciates well written short stories and I crave more of these. All 10 stories were worth reading, but some made me want to hear more...and (in my mind) called for additional chapters. However... I believe the reader is supposed to just "ponder the possibilities." In that regard, I think this collection of short stories would be a worthy choice for book club discussion. Perhaps each member could summarize and lead the discussion on one or two of the stories. And each participant could offer opinion on the ending...did they want more?
What did they think of the ending...what "might have happened next.?" For better or worse, so many aspects of human nature and interaction are revealed in these stories.

I read Lily King's wild Euphoria and loved Writers and Lovers last year, so I was eager to read her first short story collection!

Five Tuesdays in Winter comprises a wide- ranging collection of ten short stories that are filled with honesty, desire, love, and loss told by characters who are emotional and filled with depth and unique perspectives.

My favorites were of a lonely bookseller who is in love with a young woman who works in his bookstore and of a young teenage boy who learns what it means to live and love while his parents are away for the summer and he is being cared for by two college- aged young men.

Each filled with it's own emotionally captivating story. Of course, as with most short story collections, I find myself wanting more from some of these and wish they were longer!

(One story made me cry and I almost NEVER cry at stories!) The only thing wrong with collection was that I wanted more more more!

What I love most about Lily King's writing is that she knows how to bring the reader right inside of the emotional lives of her characters. Such a gift.
