Karen Azinger tries a variety of writing styles in this collection of short stories. The first two, Prophecy's Twist, and The Assassin's Tear, are set in the world of Erdhe, the world of the Silk and Steel saga. These two stories are some of Azinger's best work, and are very well polished. Prophecy's Twist takes place 1,000 years before the time of the Steel Queen, it explores the dangers of overly powerful magic. The Assassin's Tear is set in the same era as the Steel Queen. It describes the Mordant's citadel as perceived from the lower levels where ordinary citizens dwell.
The other stories, while not quite up to the caliber of Azinger's mastery of fantasy writing are interesting reads nonetheless. She explores several interesting topics, especially considering the role of women in society and what unintended consequences a male-dominated society may entail.
