Digitally remastered and expanded deluxe three disc (two CDs + NTSC/Region 0 DVD) edition of their 2001 debut album featuring a bonus CD containing additional studio and live records plus a bonus DVD that includes videos, home movies and exclusive live footage. Asleep in the Back is home to many timeless tracks which remain firm fan favorites and make up a good proportion of their live shows now, including the singles 'Powder Blue', 'Red', 'Newborn' and the epic 'Scattered Black And Whites'. The album was nominated for that year's Mercury Music Prize, which they would go on to win in 2008 for Seldom Seen Kid. Universal. 2009.

I have to admit that although l had liked what l had seen of Elbow on TV, it was not until like many others l was blown away by the majestic 'The Seldom Seen Kid', that l started to buy their albums.
While there are some great songs on Asleep In The Back, l found the production a little soporific so can understand why some listeners on first take found it too melancholic for them. Many original fans will love this sound which does give the album a uniform feel.
However, being new to all these tracks except Scattered Black & Whites, l preferred a lot of the alternative versions on disc 2. Some of the disc 2 productions seem more dynamic to my ears and on the live tracks, we all know what feeling Guy Garvey puts into his performances. And this energy in harmony with his mates in the band, can add a different dimension to the music.
You may not enjoy all the extras in this 3 disc set, but there are a couple of decent songs not on the original album, and although some of the visuals in the video content may not quite be up to the standards of the music, it nonetheless provides an interesting glimpse of the bands earlier days.
All in all as this edition is now available on Amazon for under £7, the product merits five stars as great value for anyone who loves Elbow - you will surely find enough here to warrant spending a few quid.
So, I bought the previous three, and have been listening to them. I think this one is my favourite of the others.
Stand-out tracks for me are "Red", which has a beautiful chorus and strings which I am such a sucker for; "Little Beast" which is splendidly dark; and "Powder Blue" moves me to tears most times, about supporting someone with an addiction or problem
All in all, this is a real grower, now i need to listen to the final two and find out why they aren't sticking to me like Asleep In The Back and Seldom Seen Kid!
This album is overlooked by many but it needs a listen.POWDER BLUE... RED... NEWBORN the best work the lads have done.
The bonus cd and dvd are all killer and great to have the early versions of Red and the brilliant GEORGE LASOOES THE MOON.Long overlooked.
The dvd is great giving a good view of the early days of the band and some classic Garvey comedy. In all a worthy investment
