In Ascent, Sir Chris Bonington splices his amazing suite of mountain stories with his less known, but equally interesting personal and family life journey. The splicing is well balanced, maintaining our interest to the last word. In a high risk sport he saw many lose their lives, Sir Chris survived to tell his tales in a very readable and personable style. An impressive ascent for a boy who failed English to a man recognised for his love for life leadership and generosity on and off mountains.

'He is the David Attenborough of mountaineering . . . Bonington's most personal memoir yet' The Times
'This is a compelling tale of fortitude and endurance' The Sunday Times
Chris Bonington is Britain’s best-known climber, having spent a lifetime among the world’s highest and wildest mountains.
In the 1960s, he made the first British ascent of the north face of the Eiger. In the 1970s, he led some of the most important first ascents ever achieved in the Himalaya, including the south face of Annapurna and the south-west face of Everest – the hard way. Along with successes came the agony of friends losing their lives on the mountain, gambling with the highest stakes of all. In the 1980s, he reached the summit of Everest, aged fifty-one, a moment of fulfilment that only renewed his passion for adventure. In the years since, he has led countless expeditions to remote peaks with small teams all over the world, his enthusiasm for remote and little-known places still burning as he enters his ninth decade.
He now looks back on his extraordinary life, recounting his family’s adventurous roots, his mother’s struggle to bring him up through the Blitz on her own, his discovery of the mountains, his fierce ambition and the long marriage that gave a sensitive boy the security to find his place in the world. Honours and fame follow the decades of risk and adventure, but nothing could protect him from the devastating fatal illness of his wife Wendy. Open, honest and full of hardwon wisdom, Ascent is the epic saga of an unrepeatable life on the edge.

About the Author
Chris Bonington, the mountaineer, writer, photographer and lecturer, started climbing at the age of 16 in 1951. It has been his passion ever since. He made the first British ascent of the North Wall of the Eiger and led the expedition that made the first ascent of The South Face of Annapurna, the biggest and most difficult climb in the Himalaya at the time. He went on to lead the successful expedition making the first ascent of the South West Face of Everest in 1975 and then reached the summit of Everest himself in 1985 with a Norwegian expedition.

Verified PurchaseI bought this book for my husband and he thinks it was a fair assessment of the climbing life of Chris Bonnington. He has admitted that some decisions on expeditions were not the best but overall a very good book.
Himalaya LoverReviewed in the United States on 1 December 20175.0 out of 5 stars Incredible book! A must read!
Verified PurchaseWow.....where to start. I've read hundreds of mountaineer and exhibition books, all the while Sir Bonnington has been my favorite author and climber. I have all of his books and with reason. He is an incredible story teller with a life chocked full of stories to tell. He makes you feel like you are there. He makes you feel as though you know the folks he is writing about personally. This book is no exception. He is such a great man and climber but he never fails to let you see his human side. That a great man such as he has feelings of doubt, fear and humility is an inspiration. This book leads you through his extraordinary life. I read it as if I was reading the holy grail. He makes you look on life as a challenge to be lived to the fullest. This book is the crown jewel in my Bonnington books and all my hundreds of mountain books. Thank you Sir Bonington. My greatest happiness for you that love has found you again. Best wishes!
Andy PolitzReviewed in the United States on 27 November 20185.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely rings the bell.
Verified PurchaseI’ve read most of his books when I was young, starting out, to learn how they all grew their climbing careers. I find myself rereading a selected few to see how they are all managing their lives after their big adventures are over.
There are comments so worth hearing here. Not something that was gained from social media, even in books or school. Theses, most valuable lessons, have been learned at the raw, sharp edge of real life experience, with 40 or 50 years to contemplate the consequences of events.
Savor this one.
