Product Description

From the Award-Winning Author of the Mark of Nexus Series

Deep beneath the ocean, stretching hundreds of miles alongside the Pacific Northwest coastline, lies the Cascadia subduction zone—a fault on the verge of unleashing a catastrophic earthquake, thirty times more powerful than the San Andreas. Unfortunately, like most tourists, Elena Cordova is oblivious.

She’s got her own pent-up stress to deal with, a humiliating breakup that’s driven her to end her tenure as a human doormat once and for all. So, when a pickpocket makes off with the last remnant of her relationship, she takes action—only to get trapped with him when disaster strikes.

Now, if either one hopes to survive, they’ll have to get past their initial impressions and work together… because in fifteen minutes, half the town will be underwater.

A note from the author:

This book, above all others I've written, has truly taken on a life of its own.

We’ve got our heroine, a second-generation Spanish American who's on a trip to shake the effects of an abusive relationship; and then we have our hero, a local homeless veteran struggling with PTSD and alcohol dependence. On paper, they’re so different. They’re coming from such different places. But when trapped together in midst of disaster, a friendship develops on this raw, human level.

From there, we see them fight to survive everything folks are going to face in real life, i.e. the earthquake, tsunami, aftershocks, scarcity, landslides, violence, isolation, etc. It sounds morbid, but there's real grit in there. People have this enduring, dimensional capacity to still seek humor amidst grief and love amidst chaos. Truly, I can't wait for you guys to read it.

Wow!!! The fast paced ups and downs of this book had me feeling like an emotional wreck one moment and a major kick-ass the next (and I'd like to think that I’m usually pretty well adjusted). I was transported into a world of utter destruction, heartbreak and hope. Even though I began this journey woefully uneducated on all things Cascadia subduction zone related, Carrie provided just the right amount of information in all the right places to lead my mind's eye through inconceivable events in unfamiliar terrain; and to top it all off, the witty banter between the main characters was funny as hell. What’s not to love…..

5.0 out of 5 stars I give As We Know It five cups of forget the coffee, you'd spill it on this non-stop action ride! 12 December 2016

It's not a mystery that I'm a HUGE Carrie Butler fan, not only of her writing, but of her graphic design work. When she offered me an early review copy of As We Know It, of course I snatched it up and downloaded it on my kindle. If you like an action packed book, than you'll love this one! You're into the book maybe three pages when things start to shake, the roof starts to collapse, and its the end of the world as Elena knows it. We've all heard about the 'big one' and now that this massive earthquake happened, Elena is thrown into survival mode with Vincent, a guy who stole from her, but in the next breath saved her life. They have fifteen minutes to get to higher ground before the tsunami hits and carries them out to sea. Elena finds herself with a strange gaggle of friends, the barista at the coffee bar and a guy who barks orders like a member of the military. Elena is focused on one thing, surviving the next fifteen minutes.

The rest is a walk between two damaged people who given the right circumstances would never trust each other, much less find a romantic spark between them. But these aren't the right circumstances, these are life or death circumstances, something Vincent is no stranger to. Elena witnesses Vincent's PTSD when the conditions they are forced into lead his mind back to the war he survived, but his men didn't. Ms. Butler's clean, honest, and well-written scenes give the reader a peek into Vincent's mind without melodrama or unnecessary descriptions. At a time when PTSD stories abound, rarely do I find one done as well as this one.

Mind you, Elena is no walk in the park either. Normally she wouldn't even be by the seashore, she'd be in Seattle, but her unfortunate choice to go on a
'get over that jack diddly' fiance vacation is cut short by the earthquake. That doesn't mean she's over the verbal abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex-fiance, but she does have to put her hatred of all men aside in an instant, which isn't easy for her to do.

There are some well-written, spellbinding and thought provoking scenes throughout As We Know It and the author did an amazing job at describing the destruction that would come with an earthquake of the Pacific Northwest coastline, and the aftermath the citizens of that area will deal with.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect balance of disaster! DISASTER, EARTHQUAKE, THRILLER & SUSPENSE even romance... IT HAS IT ALL!!! 22 April 2017

Please write more novels like this one. Personally, I love disaster... a good old fashioned earthquake, volcano, tsunami, how about an ice storm, blizzard, raging fire, tornado, hurricane... anything disastrous... maybe even a pandemic. I bought this book for the disaster theme. So many SHTF genres authors use the old standby and most times over the top everyone are raped, robbed and eaten... not necessarily in that order. " and I found it very refreshing that this author gave a realistic plot line that was carefully woven with earthquake & tsunami action and adventure. The storyline was woven with Veteran PTSD, emotional abuse, self-esteem issues, PTSD trauma, weight issues and so much more issues that I really do not have the words for. I couldn't keep track of the all the issues but she blended them right into the book for a perfect balance.

My own critic would be to make it a longer book - was sad when it ended, thank you for taking the time to have a lot of varied characters and all through the book I kept waiting to find out if she just had an emotional breakdown and dreamed it all up.

With all the issues touched on, character development, action, and so forth... the author hit this right out of the ballpark. A fantastic balance of everything. It was so well balanced that none of the plot lines overpowered each other. I was actually fine with this romance type... it wasn't over the top - realistic...she made Elana into any gal... didn't stay too much on actual details of her looks just a little "chubby" and that was about it and spanx... oh God... the description of getting in and out had me cracking up. We never find out just how overweight the main character is... we are left with "chubby" but in this day and age..."chubby" could be a mere 10lbs over. Marilyn Monroe would be considered "chubby" by today's standards.

How about-about a sequel and side stories - after all this disaster happened all up the coast! What happened to California? What happens next? Write more on this storyline...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best come-back book I've read in a long time 13 December 2016

Best come-back book I've read in a long time! It was intense and exciting and frightening and romantic with a thread of sarcastic humor holding it together. I absolutely loved it! It was phenomenal! Carrie Butler has a way with description that draws you in and makes you feel like you're a part of the story, and this one does that in such a fantastic way. Elena is a kick-ass character from the very beginning, standing on her own and sticking up for herself. But if she hadn't had Vincent, someone who is so much more than he seems, to guide her through the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake, she may have been doomed before we ever got a chance to know her. As they make their way in search of family and friends, we find two broken people who are destined to change not only their lives but those of the people with which they come in contact. We meet people that we become attached to, cry over those who are lost and wish we could dish it out to those who take advantage of the situation (And there are always those who take advantage of the pain of others.). But the adventure these two imperfect and improbable friends lead us on is filled with excitement, danger, fear and a myriad of emotions neither of them is ready to face.

Since her Mark of the Nexus series, I have looked forward to Ms Butler publishing again. Her characters are witty, relatable, filled with angst and emotion and most of them have a humorous edge that makes us smile or even chuckle in the midst of the danger they take us through. This story is realistic and inevitable and definitely didn't disappoint. I laughed and cried and felt. I loved it and can't wait to see what she has in store for us next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, nonstop action with complex, well drawn characters 13 December 2016

I love Carrie Butler's work so I was thrilled when her latest book came out. It more than met my expectations. You can tell this one has been meticulously researched. It's got a nonstop pace so be prepared to do nothing else until you've finished this book. This is the kind of book that makes you want to hide somewhere so that no one will bother you until you've finished it, savoring every breathless moment of it. What I love the most though about this book is the complexity of the characters. Neither character is what they appear to be and you get to watch them grow and change as they're challenged by life and death situations again and again. Very, very satisfying. I think Elena is especially well done. She struggles with so many things that every woman I know struggles with in relationships, particularly her self-image, self-worth and confidence. What I love about this book is that even though Vincent is awesome, Elena's growth is not dependent on him. Sure, he challenges her, and he's got enough bad-boy in him to make any woman swoon, but it's really the situation that the two of them find themselves in that forces Elena out of her quagmire of relationship and self-worth issues and into action, revealing who she really is and how very much she is actually capable of both enduring and accomplishing. It's inspiring. I think Butler does an excellent job of walking the line between damaged and complicated characters and serious romance in this novel. Vincent grows, too and in ways you don't expect. For me, the dynamic between these two is completely unexpected and original. Couple that with the action-packed thrill ride they're on and you've got a hit. Don't miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bet you didn't see this coming 13 December 2016

You won't find any sparkly vampires in this Pacific Northwest disaster thriller / romantic suspense. There's no need for blood-sucking paranormal monsters. The real-life threat is far more chilling.

AS WE KNOW IT is a fast-paced ride that has all the things a reader wants--action, suspense, realistic complex characters, good dialogue, a well-researched setting, and a well-executed plot. It even has a little love thrown in for us diehard romance readers. I definitely give the author points for choosing a disaster scenario that is very real and so very NOT cliche.

I loved her Mark of Nexus series. Kudos to Ms. Butler for crafting another great read.
