Product Description

"Fascinating post-apocalyptic tale with plenty of action and intrigue." ~Michael Levy (Goodreads Review)

New York City was the capital of the world, the city that never sleeps. It was a city of beauty, wealth, and culture… then the virus changed everything.

Twist is socially awkward, painfully shy and prone to panic attacks. Most of all, he desperately wants to get out from under his best friend Dodger’s shadow. All Dodger wants is to get laid, and his narcissistic nature seems to be his golden ticket. Together they are known as the Gutter Punks, modern day Robin Hoods who steal from the rich and give to the poor. In a world where supplies meant power, they are the best at stealing them.

Ten years after the virus wiped out half of the population, survivors emerge as carriers. Life still prevails and the wealthy hide away in towers, indulging in drugs, sex, and violence just to pass the time, while the poor live in squalor under the city streets, migrating through abandoned subway stations and sewers.

On their latest supply raid, the Gutter Punks unknowingly steal a cure that puts them in a game of chess between the ailing Emperor of Manhattan and the war hungry Governor of Brooklyn. Forcing them into a quest that will lead them from the highest peaks of the Empire State Building, to the darkest corners of the underground, and into lands they never thought they’d step foot in, where the psychos, crazies and cannibals hide around every corner… through the shadows of a dying city.

2.0 out of 5 stars This is a painful book to read 2 October 2014

This is a painful book to read. The story is interesting. The concept is interesting. I kept wanting to like it. However, the writing and editing are clunky and keep getting in the way of a good story.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Touch of Charles Dickens in New York City, 2025 31 May 2014

Two most excellent thieves, Gutter Punks, are on a meds drive, nobnobbing with the the pampered Scraper Babies. The team of Dodger and Twist are n the simple meds run to steal from the rich and give to the poor who need the antibiotics to lengthen their risky lives on the streets of Manhattan. This drug run is different. They team up with a former member Smith, get chased and separated, to meet later on. It doesn't quite out that way this time: Smith disappears, Dodger is hit with a virus for a mission to get the stash in Smith's possession. The too often used word "quest" takes the reader through the area of Manhattan to the turfs of the Runts, Red and her Tribe, the murderous Sons of Adam, and into the dangerous realm of Lord Chrysler.
That is just the action for the charm of the book lies in the characters. The mischievous team of Dodger and Twist are a wonder to read. The rescue by the heroes saving the honor of Gia cements her to them and she isn't about to leave. The intro of the Runts in Central Park adds to their strength as a mission by Red and the Tribe. The mission brings them more than trouble with a vendetta yet to be played out. Overshadowing the little people on the streets are two big boys: Reynolds, the mayor of Manhattan and his rival Lord Chrysler in Brooklyn. The characters are nicely melded in with the story in the giant rumble towards the end.
This is a novel not easily forgotten with a plot that moves swiftly, blends in a good amount of humour, dealings and deceptions, and schemes from the powers that be which will push for a bigger conflict yet to come. I have nothing but admiration for this book. Wilbert Stanton is a powerful writer weaving in good characters in a deadly and delicious plot, Summer is coming and it is time to get your reading list together; this is one book that should be on it,.
5.0 out of 5 stars Set in post-pandemic world but don't kid yourself! Delightfully Dickens-ian Meets Escape from New York! 29 July 2014

I had to put aside my issues about it being some kind of post-pandemic book and just enjoy the immediate immersing of my fantasy bug to enjoy two characters trying to being Twist and Dodger. For someone who not only read but includes Oliver Twist as one of her favorite books I caught a bunch of subtle tribute to Dickens within the actual story lines, but from this futuristic viewpoint.

Personally I found the story absolutely delightful, I could care less that it was not the post-pandemic story, it because a story of the relationship between these two best friends and how it changed and expanded itself into something almost magical and frightening as one friend is racing against time to safe the other.

Don't sell it short and don't expect it to have a bunch of post-pandemic troupes because truthfully this is a story which is a little Escape from NY meets Charles Dickens meets Stand By Me...

Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.
5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Epic story 22 June 2014

This book is a great tale of life in a post apocalyptic New York City. As the story reads on you begin to attach with the characters in many way as they continue to blossom right before your eyes. Also New York City is described in such detail in this world that you can't help see it in great detail as the story continues and you get more and more pieces to this city painted vividly for your imagination. My only regret is to have read it too fast before the next book is completed so if you are reading this Wilbert Stanton, I'm patiently waiting...for now.

A good post apocalyptic story. Told with an outlook of hope, despair, cruelty, and a little romance, there is something for everyone who likes a good adventure.
