King’s Envoy
From the beginning, Cas Peace's fabulous characters became my friends, and I couldn't put the book down as they went through terrifying adventures.
Sullyan is, of course, the woman all women want to be, or know they are deep inside. Brave, strong and capable of coping with anything while also being beautiful and desirable.
And Taran, who is faced with trying to become really good at his Artesan skills, leads us through his journey to finding a master to train him in metaphysical skills.
I just loved this book and was SO grateful that after midnight, when I reached the end, with Sullyan in deep trouble, that I had bought the next in the series, Kings' Champion, to carry on with.
King’s Champion
If at all possible, this is better than King’s Envoy
After devouring King's Envoy and ploughing into this one, I wasn't disappointed.
Cas Peace has a talent for keeping a reader hooked to the last death-defying minute.
Poor Sullyan was in such deep trouble at the beginning of the book and I had to wait till the end before I discovered how much this wonderful strong, brave, woman could handle!
And this is where I discovered that she is still in deep trouble!
And this is where I made my first mistake. I should have strung it out until I could get the next in the series, King's Artesan, because now I'm in suspense, wondering how she's going to get herself out of trouble.
King’s Artesan
Sully implodes the dreaded Staff - and survives!
Well - the last we heard of Major Sullyan in book 2 - Kings Champion, was that she had won the trial of combat against her arch enemy, Rykan. But at great cost. She had been burned and damaged by Rykan's arcane powers, and still had his poison deep within ... slowly killing her.
She and her friends had to find the Staff as this was the only chance she had of a cure. She was so weakened that she wasn't able to leave Andaryon to help her friends find the Staff, and had to wait while they fought the other contender for the Staff - Sonten - who wanted the Staff's powers to enable him to rule Andaryon, and Albia!
In the end, Sonten and Sully's compatriot, Commander Vanyr, in their struggle for the Staff, are both destroyed as it launches through energy barriers from Albia to Andaryon. Well, Vanyr survives for a short while - just long enough for Sully to locate him, and the Staff that he holds close to his body as he lies dying.
She uses the staff to clear her of the poison. And she realises that she is the only one who can now destroy it, with the risk of it destroying her too. She takes the Staff to a safe energy tunnel and uses her remaining energy to implode it. She hasn't enough energy to escape the cataclysm and is thrust into an energy void, lost to all, and unable to call for help.
Until her healer friend, Rienne, discovers her with empathic powers, and draws her back to reality. You would think that all the problems are over now, wouldn't you? Sully healed. The staff destroyed.
But no, my friends. There is one other, who commissioned the Staff initially, who now wants it back. Desperately!
Cas Peace is now on my list of favourite authors for her wonderful ability to write fascinating, fast and furious yet deeply moving novels with larger than life, yet truly real characters.
