A body is discovered underneath the floor of a wooden pavilion in a country park. There is evidence that someone may have discovered the body earlier but then covered it up again. Dr Kate Hanson - criminal psychologist - and her colleagues in the Unsolved Crime Unit - must try and piece together what happened and identify the body.
This is a fascinating crime novel with plenty of intriguing details which when pieced together create the full devastating picture of how the victim actually met his death. I did work out who had done it before it was finally revealed but it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story or the nail biting finale.
This book is the second in the series featuring Kate Hanson. You really do need to read this series in the right order as if you read this book before reading the first one you will know who the murderer was in the first book. This is a very well novel with an authentic feel to it because of the author's own experience. The characters are interesting and don't always get on together though they are clearly a closely knit team.

This is A J Cross's second book. I gave her first one 5 stars so now I have nowhere else to go with this one except to say she has now put herself right up there with Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen. It is good to see we now have a British author who can compete with the best. I looked forward to reading this and meeting some of the characters again. Now they are somehow more fully formed, like meeting old friends. Again the novel is set around the outskirts of Birmingham and contains old and new bodies - all dead of course. Plenty of red herrings once more and another twist in the tail at the end. I was absolutely hooked from start to finish. I do hope another one in this series will be out soon - can't wait to see if Kate and Joe progress, let alone see how many more bodied may be buries around the Birmingham conurbation. Glad to see the cat is still with us.

Almost but not quite.

The first thing to say is that this is pretty well written in terms of use of the English language. But it lacks any character development and the characters become forgettable. Going through it, someone's name would come up and I'd think `who's that?`. There's one very confusing part around 64% through, where the heroine is going home, then she's stomping around her garden, then she's driving.home again. After a few read throughs it clicked with me but this shows a laugh k of a good edit, as does the high number of typos. The police are rather rough, fat, dull. Shoppers who don't like science, and the heroine pretty much has to solve everything herself. Finally, th e res a notion of telling you how she solved it which would have been better dripped out in conversations. The pace is quite fast for the last quarter but a very frustrating book owing to the above. Hence the low mark.

I live in the part of Birmingham where this story is set so it is intriguing to see how the author uses the area in the story. The names used are of actual places and can be recognised as such. However some of the narrative is a bit overcolourful particularly at the beginning of some of the chapters. The story does reflect a similar action to the first in the series and I suppose reflects the author's experience. I enjoyed it and look forward to the third in the series.
