Pricy but worth it. The book is great and so is the art and illustrations. I love seeing different variations and styles of characters that turned out differently.

2.0 out of 5 stars Highly disappointing artbook for a marvelous tv series

I own a bunch of artbooks (from 90s movies onwards) and I got to say it lacked the quality of books like Up in content (which I can't blame due to the quantity of characters and they chose to only include them in a book, however it's no excuse to the lack of quality of this book).
It has good images (basically), but lacked deepness. No VA comments that gives us a glimpse of who the characters are, neither character supervisors, story directors, what designs were thought first and dumped (come on! Jim has two early designs but they don't say anything of why they didn't choose one, it's just thrown there! And then they jump to last designs in a couple of pages), etc. You have Blaas and Del Toro sporadic comments which could be easily said in an interview/blog and they talk about team work but it lacks a lot of other crew member comments to at least feel them involved! They mention that originally it was aimed for a movie, but there is nothing of the early concepts/story.
To add more to my huge dissapointing is that most of the pictures are the 3D full images, it made this book seem like the books made for children to basically read the movie rather than an artbook.
I love artbooks because the show the early thoughts of the story (saying why they went ahead with an idea but with deepness), some early storyboards (lucky we are if they are from scenes that were deleted), designing while pointing out why they went ahead to have certain designs (with more detail than this one), including early ideas (a few are included for protagonist... They added a part of storyboard-> scene which, honestly, was more for a YouTube video rather than a book, those pages would delve more on the villains which are only pages with a single paragraph (and a single one for Morgana! It prouds of the female team but it says NOTHING from them and we don't see early designs of her)
If you want to delve further into animation I highly suggest Rise of the guardians and How to train your dragon artbooks (from Dreamworks) because they go beyond what you really saw in the movies (here the only notorious comment is that Gunmar's place was the original home of trolls and it is not worth the full price to only this trivia).

I only suggest this book if you like to collect images and want them printed physically, otherwise save the money.
