NOW FEATURING POSTSCRIPT FROM MARIA POPOVA

'When we really see each other, we want to help each other' - Amanda Palmer

Imagine standing on a box in the middle of a busy city, dressed as a white-faced bride, and silently using your eyes to ask people for money. Or touring Europe in a punk cabaret band, and finding a place to sleep each night by reaching out to strangers on Twitter. For Amanda Palmer, actions like these have gone beyond satisfying her basic needs for food and shelter - they've taught her how to turn strangers into friends, build communities, and discover her own giving impulses. And because she had learned how to ask, she was able to go to the world to ask for the money to make a new album and tour with it, and to raise over a million dollars in a month.

In the New York TImes bestseller The Art of Asking, Palmer expands upon her popular TED talk to reveal how ordinary people, those of us without thousands of Twitter followers and adoring fans, can use these same principles in our own lives.

Loved this book. So many books like this are based mainly on what you should do but Amanda provides us with a biography sharing her life experiences. In the process, she explains the lessons she's learnt in life and this is what's key.

There is so much heart and raw honesty in this book that at times it is overwhelming. Because we censor ourselves, don't we? Because it's hard to trust people when we make ourselves vulnerable and naked.
The Art of Asking has so many beautiful ideas about art and connection and humanity. Amanda connects the dots and through a series of (many) out of sequence stories, she shows us what it is to live your art.

This is an extraordinary book written by an extraordinary human being who has and is conducting a broad scale experiments with the world. Many people talk about the New Economy, Amanda is living it and with "The Art Of Asking" she invites us into her test tube.

This is perhaps the only book of 1000's I've read that I didn't feel like I was reading, rather feeling. I shifted some of my thinking about giving and asking. I've no doubt I'll be better for it and so will everyone I meet. Thank You Amanda.

Having never heard her music and only a brief understanding of her past this was a riveting account of her life and the struggle of contributing to people and the greater struggle of allowing people to contribute.
