About the Author
Bestselling Canadian author Evan Currie has an imagination that knows no limits, and he uses his talent and passion for storytelling to take readers everywhere from ancient Rome to the dark expanses of space. Although he started out dabbling in careers such as computer science and the local lobster industry, Currie quickly determined that writing the kinds of stories he grew up loving was his true life’s calling. Beginning with the techno-thriller Thermals, Evan has expanded the universe within his mind with acclaimed series such as Warrior’s Wings, the Scourwind Legacy, the Hayden War Cycle, and Odyssey One. He delights in pushing the boundaries of technology and culture, exploring the ways in which these forces intertwine and could shape the future of humanity—both on Earth and among the stars.

Mr Currie writes well and I was able to complete the reading in under half a day because 1. it held my interest and 2. at only 268 pages it was rather short and cut off suddenly. Once into the book the reader is taken on a wild ride as Commander Stephan Michaels leads his six vessels on an intelligence gathering mission on the Empire's outer rim.
The First Reads price of $1.99 was excellent value but at a full price of $7.34 I would probably wait till it was offered as a special deal. If you're a fan of Mr Currie's, go for it. Highly recommended.

But not quite there with this one.
All the elements are in place for a cracking read, which, by and large it is. Superbly well written so nothing to grate the nerves of some who has some sense of grammar, fast paced and of course in the same universe as his previous books. However, what is missing from some of the earlier better books is the build up and the sense of tension. The characters are not as well fleshed out and quite one dimensional for Currie.
Most of all though I can't buy into the mystical aspect. Currie introduced a type of super being - a God if you like - and he along with others such as Gaia have turned a hard sci-fi series of outstanding storyline into something with a slightly fantasy almost religious tone. It just doesn't work for me and I don't see what this thread brings to the table.
Overall, a great romp through space but a slight dip compared to his previous books.
The author adds multiple characters with multiple names and titles and aliases every few pages and the reader have a difficult time following who is who and who is doing want. Snippets of information are constantly added but without sufficient details. And then there are the acronyms and abbreviations "Double A", NTSI whatever etc. All that padded with poor dialogs and pointless banter. May be the author imagined that he's writing a script for a South American soap opera.
Also, at some point one starts to wonder if the author didn't have a story when he started writing but was just adding characters so he can built one somehow.
I've endured through 6 books of cheesy and pathetic teen drama but this book is on a completely different level.
I particularly liked the technical descriptions of fantasy physics, warp drives and invisible beings with telepathic powers. Great job.
