Product description

Product Description

Kelvin has found a place where he belongs; in the ocean. He excels in his vocation as a sea cucumber diver.
When the captain dies, revealing a huge stash of illicit substances, join Kelvin and the remaining crew in their quest to return to Cairns.
Death, drugs, sex, mermaids and the spectre of Robert Palmer all feature in this page scrolling epic.
If Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting and Ben Elton’s High Society were banished to a coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef, their spawn would be Aquatic Grunge.
Aquatic Grunge: A new novel, a new genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant read 12 October 2012

Aquatic Grunge is quite different from any book I have read before. It is extremely well written. It had me laughing out loud in places and completely surprised in others. The plot is unique and has you guessing at every turn. It gave me an unusual insight into the male mind. It certainly is a book that you keep thinking about long after you have turned the last page. Looking forward to reading the next one.

I read this Kindle Book on my iPad and finished it today 12/2/2012.

It's a great read. I was sorry when it ended. It is Tim Wintonesque with us sharing the heroes down and out life. The surprising elements are Matthew Reilly Temple and Contestesque. Chris' ideas are surprising and interesting.

Well done Chris Johnstone. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I can't wait for the next one.

A clever book that dovetails into a surprising ending. Part fact, part fiction, part fantasy. A great read. Loved it. I want to see more from this writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm Not Sure if Johnstone is a Genius or Crazy as Hell 4 October 2011
By T. Armstrong - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Aquatic Grunge is unlike anything I've ever read, and I can't quite determine if Chris Johnstone is crazy or a genius. Regardless, I loved this book, scoring high all around.

While the story mostly follows Kelvin Daniels--a self-indulgent cucumber diver--there are also chapters dedicated to other characters--parallel storylines that occasionally mingle with Kelvin's. I initially found myself questioning their place, but in the end, they totally paid off.

Johnstone successfully tackles Grunge Lit with an abundance of drugs, alcohol, and sex--although there was probably more "talk" of sex than the actual act. Hooked from the start, I devoured this book at record speed. I was engrossed, captivated by the characters, charmed by the voice, and pleasantly surprised by the cleverness behind it all.

The worst part of the book... it ended.

This read will not suit everyone. Because it's strongly influenced by sex, drugs, and Robert Palmer, some people are going to hate it. I keep comparing it to Slaughterhouse Five--although they are two completely different stories, the overall feel is the same. No matter what your taste, it's likely you would agree that this book would score high in Originality.

I always say that if I keep thinking about a book long after I've put it down, it's a great freaking book. Aquatic Grunge is just that.
