I read this book in one sitting. I knew when it was coming out and was up early and read it on my kindle, without breaks (even to go to the toilet! I mean, really?). But I HAD to, because I knew it would be gripping (it's not a thriller or anything, actually, it is in a way) and because I knew it would hold transformative value for me.
I have known Drew for a while now and follow him on most of the social media platforms and have always been inspired by his thoughts/advice on anxiety disorders but more so, I have found him to be the only person to say it as it really is. He is an inspiration but he is also down to earth and humble. He is a good friend to so many. I don't wish to sound sycophantic, but he truly is a hero to me. And I know he is to many. God knew what he was doing when he made Drew, and I think he (Drew, not God!) perhaps went through all that he did in his life, to make a difference to so many other people's lives.
And this book will show you the truth; not just what Drew endured but his recovery. And that recovery is marked by tenacity, repetition of getting out there and facing it, courage, commitment. Knowing what fear really is, understanding that there is no way out of anxiety but through it.
Why has Drew recovered when others still struggle (myself included)? I think because of this quoted from the book: 'I got up every single morning, immediately got dressed, got myself ready, and went out the door to do scary things. No medication. No herbs. No supplements. No self-compassion. No self-care. Just a relentless drive INTO fear and panic every single day. I had one job: to learn how to experience anxiety, panic, and fear properly so that I would not fear them any longer. I did whatever I had to do to get the job done.'
And there lies the answer; the truth. Commitment, courage, knowledge and sheer bullheadedness to get to the other side of fear.
This is the answer. This is recovery. And I believe it is the only way.
The book made me smile, giggle at times and also moved me to tears. It is very moving.
I had the privilege of being allowed into the world of someone who took anxiety by the throat and shook it hard but also the pages revealed how a life can be transformed when armed with the skills and commitment in which to change it.
I believe I will always think of Drew now when I hear Dire Strait's Sultans of Swing but perhaps more importantly, I will keep referring back to this amazing and revealing book whenever I feel I just can't face another day of fear and anxiety.
It's the best book on recovery from anxiety; honest, courageous, revealing and within its pages, it informs the reader of the true path to live without anxiety.
I love it. Best book I have read. If only there were ten stars to be awarded because it is worthy of them and much more.
