A deep disappointment. I'm a broadly uncritical constant Kim Newman reader, and I don't have the energy to finish this. It has all the same flaws as "Cha Cha Cha", embedded in too specialised a genre niche and no plot to speak of.
Unlike the giallo mis-step, though, there's no other meta eye-candy to soften the blow, just a weird nod to Henry James (the only point of obscurity I was prepared to look up) and one of the weakest of the Buffy-verse's Dick van Dyke supporting cast.
It's also a ret-con into the established timeline, and even with the series fresh in mind after a re-read ahead of the release of "Johny Alucard" I have no idea when or how or why this group of characters got to be where they are.
A sad day for me, but really nothing to recommend this at all.
