I used to quite like Lucy Monroe but maybe she just can't write historicals.
It took me ages to read this book cos I found it awkward and not very believable so I just kept putting it down for months at a time.
Having said that the characters were quite sweet, just not a page turner imo

Will the real Lucy Monroe please stand up?

Well what a surprise this book was. I have read all of Lucy Monroe's contemporary books and have enjoyed them enormously so was anxious to read her latest. I am sorely disappointed to admit that I did not enjoy this book at all.
I don't expect perfect historical accuracy but this was marked, much beyond the typical inappropriate language. The heroine thought and acted like a modern day girl and sometimes I wanted to shake her; at one point I was shouting at the book as she acted in such an incredibly stupid manner (I have never done that before!). The story was silly and laboured.
Although I haven't read any other historical books by Lucy Monroe, I know that she has written many. I cannot believe that these books have been written by the same author as this. I can only conclude that she is now much more suited to modern day stories and people.

Light and frothy.

Very well written. I enjoy reading Ms Monroe historical romance. It might be a bit too light for serious reader of 'Historical Romance' , it might seem too modern to them.But I enjoy the heroine spirit, she is someone that I feel go and take life and not let her become a victim. And the hero turn out to be an understanding human being and saw the real person in the heroine.Though he has a temper but it only comes into play only because of the fear that the heroine might be in danger.

These characters the their story caught me from the beginning! Neither were content to fit into the role others wanted for them... And even as they fought each other, they were ment for none but each other. There is a stalker and a blackmailer that lend some intrigue, but this is a story of a man showing a woman she can be independent and have a mind while still being a wife.... And that even though she was labels as undesirable, that she was indeed beautiful and wanted by him. Also, a woman teaching a man that he deserves loyalty, companionship, return desire and love... And that it's safe and we'll worth it to love in return.

I loved this book. Annabelle is just about on the shelf in the Tons eye. Shes not much to look at and has a small dowry. Along come Laird Ian MacKay.. He has to marry in a year and it has to be to a english woman. To get his fortune from his stepfather. Needless to say he is very angry about the whole thing. . He decides finally to make a list to pick this wife he doesn't want. Plain, modestly dowered, older ,practical and demand little of his purse. He meets Annabelle right away and asks her to marry him.. When Annabelle asks his reason for the rush he tells her why and tells her his list. Needless to say she says no and heads in the other direction, you see Annabelle has plans and secrets of her own and they don't include the arrogant Laird Ian MacKay.

I've read a lot of this author's contemporary stuff but never anything else. This is a longish story and does tend to drag in places, I think it would've been better if it were 100 pages shorter.
+++Spoilers+++
The author did a pretty good job of keeping things authentic to the times and I appreciated the fact that the sex scene occurred after they married. There were some quite intimate scenes to keep things steamy before that though. I liked the idea of the story where the H draws up his ridiculous list and then later finds that actually the h doesn't fit his criteria but in a good way. I loved that the H was so single-minded about the h but didn't realise why.
Not bad but I prefer the author's contemporary stuff
