Review
A gorgeous book - rich, intelligent and dark in equal measure. It immerses you in the late 16th century and leaves you wrung out with terror. This is historical fiction at its most sumptuous. ― Rory Clements, author of the the John Shakespeare
Wonderful! Beautiful writing, and Perry's Elizabethan London is so skilfully evoked, so real that one can almost smell it. ― Giles Kristian, author of Lancelot
I knew before I got to the bottom of the first page that The Angel's Mark was the real thing. In an increasingly crowded field, this one is going to stand out. ― S. G. MacLean, author of The Seeker series
An impressively dramatic and gripping debut novel. Elegantly written, thoroughly researched, The Angel's Mark draws us into the murky world of Elizabethan London where life is a game of chance, and savage death a close neighbour, quick to pounce on the unsuspecting. I predict that we will be seeing much more of Nicholas Shelby, physician and reluctant spy. ― Anne O'Brien, author of The Scandalous Duchess
The Angel's Mark has the pace of a thriller... S.W. Perry is a welcome addition to the ranks of historical crime novelists. ― Simon Brett
A remarkably assured and classy debut. Perry grabs your attention from the first paragraph and holds it throughout a fascinating journey into high and low life of Tudor London. This could, hopefully, be the start of an addictive series. ― L C Tyler
A strong and convincing debut -- Antonia Senior ― The Times
A tense whodunit and a fine debut. ― Weekend Sport
An engaging Elizabethan thriller ― Sunday Times
[A] sad, compassionate story beautifully told ― Daily Express

This book is pretty much my ideal of all that is perfect. Historical accuracy, the chance to learn more about a historical period, characters that are real and don't have a sudden change in order to make the plot go somewhere, great writing, a real who dun it that I have a chance at guessing, and a resolution that makes sense (and I only allow Agatha Christie to do the 'bit monologue at the end to reveal all'). My only quibbles are minor: the font size is TINY and pages are in italics. That's a problem for people like me with multifocals who read in bed with low light. And whilst the prose is in a semi Elizabethan style, all the characters sound like they're out of 2019, which I got used to. But I do think Ned was remarkably well spoken and articulate, and had excellent general knowledge for a son of the working class on the Southbank. But they were passing observations and not all fatal flaws. Have bought the second book the second I finished this one. Can't believe such an accomplished book is a debut.

Spoilt by present tense
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 October 2018Verified Purchase
I tried hard to like this as I enjoy novels of this genre. However, I couldn't get on with the use of the 3rd person present tense ("Harriet goes to the table"); there's a reason nearly every other novel is written in the first person or the past tense. I also found the storyline a tad lightweight and not a patch on CJ Sansom whom this author is compared with.

tense of writing dreadful to read and listen to
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 January 2019Verified Purchase
After two chapters, however interesting the story may be, I am finding the third person? present tense that this book is written in REALLY, REALLY annoying and completely and utterly unnecessary and therefore will not be purchasing any more by this author. I bought audio version and it is even more annoying listening than reading, if that's possible!

A Physician's Tale
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 September 2018Verified Purchase
Having aleays had a strong interest in this period of history, this book was 'right up my street'.
Well written as a fiction novel, it is well researched & provides an insight into this period using recordedobservations of this period.
It never ceases to amaze me, how similar in many ways both Elizabethan periods are. Full of discovers in science, travels to unexplored lands - though most of them involve space travel in our Elizabethan age. Will there be another age of discovery in another 300 years?
Whilst the official public image of women in this age is one of domesticity & subservience, knowing human nature it is expected there were far more spirited women alive & doing a ' man's work than credit is given for.
Ironically the most powerful person in England was a woman & that was accepted. I wonder how often, if ever, she thought abiut her female subjects?
A thoroughly good read, both for historical content & the tale of a Suffolk yeoman's son in his quest to be a surgeon.

The Angel' s Mark

A brilliant read. As a fan of C J Sansom, having read all the Shardlake books including the latest Tombland, this is indeed every bit as good an offering except the main character is a physician not a lawyer. With all our modern day understanding of medicine and how the body works it's quite amazing how little they knew at that time. I've pre-ordered the next book and look forward to that when it's available next year.

My interest flags in parts
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2018Verified Purchase
I love reading novels with a historical context. I was attracted to this book because the blurb said it is is like C J Sansom novels. However, it's writing is not as clever nor as well paced as Sansom ‘s novels. The book gets better as the book lengthens; the characters are well drawn and the descriotions of the surroundings are good, if shuddering to 21st-century readers.
