Heroes: Book Two

Young mechanic Andrew Campbell’s life couldn’t be better. He is about to restore a Ford Mustang with his dad before heading off on the ultimate cross-country road trip with his best friend, Tanner McKenzie.

But tragedy strikes, and Andrew’s life is shattered. Worried his family will be torn apart if he doesn’t step in, Andrew makes a tough choice between following his heart and doing what he needs to do to protect his little brother.

When Andrew pushes Tanner away, Tanner heads off on the planned trip alone. Once Tanner leaves town, his life takes a different path, and it’s ten years before he returns. Now a firefighter, he’s never forgotten his first love, and no one has ever taken Andrew’s place in his heart. He’s determined to see if Andrew feels the same way. He just hopes Andrew’s excited to see him, hopes that he’s available—and finally out—after all this time.

They might not have been ready to deal with emerging feelings years ago, but now might be the time for their second chance at love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Although they both realize they like each other they certainly haven’t talked about it 18 October 2015
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This is my first book by this author, yes, this is the second one in the series but some how I read this one first. I didn’t feel lost so I’m guessing it doesn’t matter.

Because this book is told in two phases instead of flashbacks won big brownie points.

The book itself happens in two phases, first 100 pages or so, is the kids being just out of school around nineteen, discovering sexuality, each other feelings and planning a big trip. Tanner and Andrew have been friends for forever but I guess the way they were brought up, neither one was allowed to express feelings or maybe they were late bloomers? Although they both realize they like each other they certainly haven’t talked about it. When things fall apart and finally Andrew pushes Tanner away, Andrew turns in on himself and decides that’s that

The second phase is Tanner coming back to town, ten years later after Andrew tells him he just can’t.

Ten years on, and Tanner never lost his love for Andrew. Andrew is still shy about everyone knowing even though everyone is ten years older. But watching these two develop a more adult friendship and then a courtship and finally a sexual relationship was charming. The way Tanner gives Andrew time, space to wrap his head and heart around everything.

The fact that Andrew finds that people are actually understanding and supportive including his brother adds a real feel good touch to the book. The HEA was also well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does Andrew keep his promise? 10 May 2016
By Tams (TTC Books and more) - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This book goes back to the time prior to events in Charlie's Hero, back to before Josh and Andrew's father died and left Andrew the man of the house. I start with this because it was this tragic event that was a catalyst for not only the way Josh was in book 1, but it explains so much more about Andrew and his relationship with his brother.

When Andrew and Josh's dad died, custody of a then sixteen year old Josh went to Andrew, who immediately put his life on hold. Nothing mattered but raising his little brother. A trip had been in the works with his best friend Tanner as soon as they graduated, but now, Andrew can't leave Josh, he has to be a father figure, the man of the house. While all this is going on, Andrew starts to realize that his feelings for Tanner have shifted somewhere along the way. He's very confused by his attraction to Tanner and subsequent jealousy when another guy approaches Tanner. Still, Andrew remains focused on Josh and sends Tanner off on their planned trip alone. He admits his feelings first, which only make it that much harder for Tanner.

Ten years later Tanner moves back to town. He never got over his first true love, his best friend Andrew. And Andrew never forgot about him either. A comment someone made in passing a decade prior set events in motion, and this is how it played out. Can a decades old friendship rebuild the trust between these two men that are still obviously in love with each other?

With the ending in book one I had to read this book, like immediately, so I did. It was nice to have some blanks filled and and some unanswered questions resolved. I loved the relationship between Tanner and Andrew, the way it slowly grew. I mean, they knew they loved each other, that wasn't the problem. The story was very well written. The right amount of angst and insecurity, emotional highs and lows, everything was balanced out from start to finish. The story flowed well as well, I devoured it in one setting. Once you read that first page, you'll be hooked, I'm certain.

A must read for anyone that likes stories where the MC's lose their way, but eventually find their way back to each other. Sort of a hard sought HEA.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reading 24 March 2016
By LAS Reviewer - Published on Amazon.com

What if you meet your true love at the wrong time in his life? What if fate gives you both a second chance?

I fell in love with these two from the first couple of chapters. Their story is sweet and yet life has a way of complicating things. This story could have gone a whole different direction if the tragedy hadn’t occurred. But it does and it felt real.

I was a little concerned about witnessing the tragedy that the blurb alludes to. The author gives the readers a chance to get to know all the parties involved and it really made it that much more personal when it happened. Still, I could see why she did it that way. I needed to see how carefree Andrew, his brother Josh, and Tanner were before to appreciate how they changed in the ten years in between. Also, it was nice to see Andrew and Tanner as friends, only just becoming aware of each other before they reunite. That conversation and the scenes before Tanner leaves on the trip, though. Tissue alert!

I felt for Andrew. Sure he was already twenty-one when he becomes responsible for his kid brother but the amount stress and the mounting “what if’s?” are enough to break just about anyone. I know he hurt Tanner initially and I was hoping that their reunion would be one where Tanner came to understand and forgive him. Tanner grows up a lot when he hits the road. I liked the direction he took his life and how it molded him from a young adult to a man.

The first half of the story is from Andrew’s POV but it’s not a first person POV. I was glad. The second half picked up from Tanner’s POV before switching back to Andrew. It’s very defined and wasn’t an issue in knowing who was speaking. No head hopping involved. The story runs a little long in some places or maybe I was just so anxious to get them to their HEA that parts simply felt unnecessary. It’s one of those stories I’d read again to be sure I didn’t miss important stuff.

The way Ms. Starr describes Tanner’s nervousness about seeing Andrew after ten years, it was so detailed, I was nervous right along with him. I don’t want to give away too much but I’ll say it wasn’t the homecoming Tanner expected but that doesn’t mean it was bad, either.

There’s a lovely little tease at the end of this story that totally has me hooked and wanting to see what happens in the next book. Surely, there’ll be a next book. There actually is a book prior to this one, Charlie’s Hero, but I didn’t realize it until little details about Josh and Charlie started fitting together.

Readers who want a whole heart true romance should pick up this book. Andrew and Tanner both are full of personality and once they’re both off the leash to love each other, it’s just beautiful to watch. Well worth the read and an easy recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars A love once lost has been found again! 7 September 2015
By Devan Huff - Published on Amazon.com

Review first posts on Nautical Star Books. I received one copy of this book at no charge from the author in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

At the end of Charlie’s Hero, you have been given a first impression of Andrew that is maybe not so great. For a lot of the book he seemed angry and possibly homophobic. Things take a turn at the very end of Charlie’s Hero and you are left wondering who Andrew really is. Andrew’s Promise will help explain what drives him and shows you a rediscovery of a love lost many years ago.

Andrew’s Promise begins several years before Charlie’s Hero takes place. The author paints a picture of an amazingly happy family. Andrew is incredibly close to both his brother and his father and life is a bowl of cherries. He and his best friend Tanner are planning a long road trip and things couldn’t be more perfect. Tragic events have Andrew’s life taking a turn for the worse and while trying to recover the pieces, Andrew pushes Tanner away.

Ten years later, Tanner returns to see if he can make something of the first love he left behind. This rekindling of the relationship between Andrew and Tanner makes up the second half of the book and picks up right where Charlie’s Hero left off.

I really like the way that the author told this story. Rather than random flashbacks, the book itself is divided into two time periods. This allowed for so much more of Andrew’s past story to be portrayed. Everything was so perfect for Andrew at the beginning of Andrew’s Promise. His family loved him, his friendship with Tanner was so close….and a bit confusing to Andrew since he really just thought they were friends. His grief when tragedy struck and his realization that Tanner could be so much more than just a friend really tugged at my heartstrings. After reading this portion of the story, you really understand how he became the man he is in Charlie’s Hero.

Andrew’s Promise is told from both characters points of view. I think I got to know Andrew a bit better than Tanner but the author does a good job of giving you a glimpse into each character’s inner thoughts and feelings. Tanner was devastated by Andrew’ rejected but was determined to find out if they could recapture what they once lost. It isn’t easy sailing…they have a lot of lost time to make up for and things are strained a bit at first. Thankfully, they actually manage to talk things out and take those first hesitant steps towards rekindling their feelings.

The major conflict in Andrew’s Promise is really Andrew’s coming out. He has omitted any mention of his sexuality for a long time and is worried how that will effect his relationship with his brother. Nic is gay….and Andrew is worried that his omission all these years will cause Nic to hate him. There is a fair amount of angst and stress about it but things work out nicely and Andrew gets his happily ever after.

The chemistry between Andrew and Tanner is pretty hot and I am a huge fan of the ‘friends to lovers’ idea. There is a nice balance of camaraderie and friendship, along with passion and angst and true love forever. The secondary characters were well developed and I think I see another book in the future for a couple of them!

If I could have made one change in this story I think I would have liked MORE of Andrew and Tanner in the present time. Not less of them in the past, because you really need that to see who Andrew truly is. But, I think I would have liked to see them spend more time getting to know you after their 10 year separation.

Overall, though, Andrew’s Promise is a wonderful story that helps explain who Andrew really is and lets the reader follow along as he falls back in love with his best friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED Drew and Tanner! 26 August 2015
By Tracy Muth ~Bayou Book Junkie - Published on Amazon.com

5 + Stars!

When I read Charlie's Hero, it was the first book I'd read by Nic Starr. I liked it. It was good and well written. I liked the characters, but when I got to the end, I knew I needed to read Andrew's story. I connected with him immediately. I LOVED this book. The first half of the book is told 10 years in the past. We get to see the friendship Drew and Tanner share. We hear all about the six month trip across the country Drew and Tanner have planned. We witness the love that is shared between the close knit family of Drew, Josh and their father. Nic let's us witness the heartbreaking tragedy these young men faced with loosing their father. Tanner is there for not only Drew, but Josh as well. Until Drew can't hide his feelings anymore, and pushes Tanner away.

We then fast forward 10 years ahead to the present. To Tanner's return to their small town. Can they pick up where the left off and right the wrongs they have both made in the past?

I'm going to say it again. I LOVED this book. I picked it up and I was hooked from the first sentence. I. Couldn't. Put. It. Down!! It was filled with heartbreak, sweetness, laughter, passion, tenderness, and above all else, love. I loved that the first half of that the book was in the past. I didn't feel like I missed anything, like I would have, had it had been told through flashbacks or conversations between the MC's. I usually don't care for this, but I loved watching Drew and Tanner fall in love, even if they didn't admit it.

The chemistry between them was astronomical. The love they shared came up off the pages like steam. You could feel it in the air, it was so strong. I felt I knew them. I can't say it enough. I just connected so strongly with these characters. I love Nic's writing. It flows well and she kept me hanging on to every word. Friends to Lovers in my favorite storyline, and this was done beautifully.

The characters were extremely likable and well developed. I loved seeing Josh and Charlie again.

I'm waiting for Patrick's story next!
