Following soon after the first book ends we find Nick's friends suffering the fallout from his little spat with Hearst. Nick attempts to make good by establishing his own firm to use th talents of those friends - but the lawyer needed to sort the paperwork has disappeared. Nick tracks him to Mexico - but the situation rapidly worsens.
These books, reflecting a very different world, are extremely readable. It doesn't hurt that as well as being insanely wealthy - so that he can largely ignore some thelegal aspects of his love for Carter Jones. In the hands of a lesser writer this might be problematic - but here it works well. The historical research seems sound and there are little touches that ground the characters. Towards the end it appears that Carter is reading The Hobbit (unnamed but from the context - another 'three volume' book is mentioned as being expected from England soon - it's clear) for example, something that Nick doesn't understand...
