Among Animals: The Lives of Animals and Humans in Contemporary Short Fiction (1) Hardcover – 6 July 2018
Stories that affirm the indelible bond among humans and animals
The relationships among human and non-human animals goes back to the beginning of time-and the ways in which these relationships have evolved (and sometimes not) is the inspiration for this collection of contemporary short fiction, penned by writers from across the globe. This diverse collection of stories explores the ways in which we live among-and often in conflict with-our non-human counterparts.
These stories feature animals from the familiar (dogs and cats) to the exotic (elands and emus), and in these stories animals are both the rescuers and the rescued. Within these pages are glimpses of the world through the eyes of a zookeeper, a shelter worker, a penguin researcher, and a neighborhood stray, among many others-all highlighting the ways in which animals and humans understand and challenge one another. Among Animals is a dynamic collection of stories from the world's most gifted contemporary authors-those who pay close attention to the creatures with which we share our planet, and who inspire us to pay closer attention as well.

Verified PurchaseI'm not sure what I expected when I purchased and started reading this book. I think I ordered it because it was recommended by one of the many animal-related blogs/newsletters that I get. Being a big animal lover, I have read many "warm fuzzy" animal books, and I wasn't looking for another one of those. But I know I expected something different than this.
In large part, these stories don't focus on the animals at all. The animals seem to be almost ancillary figures that could be there or not, and in some cases it wouldn't make much of a difference to the story. Also, several of the stories have a mystical or fantasy aspect that, I admit, is not my favorite genre. So I'm giving four stars because I think this is a very unusual book, and I think it would probably appeal to a lot of readers. It just wasn't really my "cup of tea."
PM MarxsenReviewed in the United States on 17 March 20144.0 out of 5 stars Sharing the World
Verified PurchaseThere are many ways to look at the world. Gazing through the eyes of animals is one that illuminates our own limits, excesses, irrational behavior, and ... animal instincts. This collection offers fresh perspective to those, like me, who may be weary with approaching the world as a geo-political chess game of men in suits. It just might be that animals are smarter than we are, less given to abstraction... more direct in their communication... easier to love and mourn. Ashland Creek Press is onto something with their focus on "eco-lit." This is a very appealing collection of stories reminds me that we are here to share the world.
