Life on the mythical island of Penglai, surrounded by friendly magical creatures, may seem idyllic … unless you're the only person there.

Life in a secluded mountain community, protected by powerful dragon sentinels, may seem peaceful … until the dragons' powers fade.

Rescuing a handsome young man from death, gaining his eternal gratitude, may seem like a fairy tale come true … until you're faced with betrayal.

An immortal life—never tasting death, may seem like every mortal's dream … unless you live for eternity after all you care for is destroyed.

* * *

Amira, a self-centered and lonely immortal from the mythical island of Penglai, rescues a handsome mortal, Raiden, from angry sea spirits and returns with him to Dragon Hollow in the mortal lands. She learns the hardships and dangers mortals face as warlords and bandits battle in unending warfare. Powerful dragons have protected Dragon Hollow for millennia, making it the only safe haven in the land, but Amira's arrival upsets that balance as she slowly learns the dragons' secrets.

Confronted with perilous choices, she struggles to understand and trust other people. Are others befriending her only because they need her help, or because they find her beauty alluring, or is it because they truly care for her? Can she trust and even love Raiden, or is he deceiving her to achieve his selfish dreams? In the end, she must decide whether or not to risk her own destruction to save her friends in Dragon Hollow, and ultimately discovers hidden powers and passions, long dormant within her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Imaginative 28 May 2012

I am a simple student who likes to read to pass the time or when I crave a good book. I love the fantasy genre. I went head over heels for Harry Potter and for the Inheritance Cycle, a.k.a. the Eragon series. I also slightly liked Twilight and loved most of The Hunger Games.

When a friend was telling me about this author, she recommended this book after I mentioned I enjoyed fantasy. What can I say? I had so much fun reading Amira. It was easy to read and had a fun plot. At first, it seemed predictable, but the end still held a few big surprises for me. It was fun to imagine the life of an immortal girl on an adventure. Even the creatures in her world were so different and interesting to read about. I liked this book a lot, and I may reread it in the future.

My only disappointment is the lack of detail. Though, the important character qualities were outlined, the book is more based on the events in the plot than the creation and imagery on the world around Amira. This book is good for a small book, but I think it would be much more memorable and successful if there were more experiences with the world, the creatures, and the characters that were not associated so strongly to the plot and the flow of the story. I like to be able to paint a picture in my head with what is going on, and at times I felt that too many details were lacking to get that clear image of all the surroundings.

This story would be so fun as an animation, I can see families loving to watch this together. I'd recommend this for anyone in the mood for a quick, fun, fantasy story.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read 10 February 2015

I rate a 5 star because it was simply enjoyable. It didn't have amazing dialog or anything worth remembering to quote later but was a quick, interesting and fun read.

There was a point where I thought it was going to be predictable but it took another route earning that extra star. I love fantasy and the world he created I found interesting. Could easily be made into a series, but still had a satisfying ending. The anime/manga feel to it I liked. I pictured every chapter as an episode to an anime which is why I chose to read it in the first place.

If you are a fan of anime or manga you should read it. Also a great read for kids a story for the family to enjoy.

First of all, I really love the cover of the book!
It grabbed my attention of interest and want to find out what is it about.
I also love the story a lot!
I think I would recommend to most people who love reading and people what are learning English.
This book is not super long, and it is very interesting as well!
Highly recommended :)!

4.0 out of 5 stars Beneath the Moon and Stars review 28 April 2012
By Beneath The Moon And Stars Blog - Published on
I liked this more than I thought I would. It was really good. Once I got into it I couldn't put it down. It was a very unique story. Amira kinda bothered me at first. She was a little bratty. By the end I liked her. She's strong. She was willing to risk herself for people she just met. At first she was just looking for adventure. Eventually she realized there was more to life than adventure. Raiden was really cute. The whole Raiden Kaifu thing was incredibly confusing. It made sense and it was a nice twist but I was incredibly confused. M'lan was seriously my favorite character. He was adorable. I want my own flying magical tortoise. There was a few secondary characters. I think that all the characters were very well done and relate able.

The beginning was a little slow. It picked up. It was pretty hard for me to put this down. I wanted to keep reading and see what was gonna happen next. Overall I really liked this. I've never read anything quite like this. I hope there is a sequel or a companion novel. I recommend if you like adventure. 4/5 Stars
