Product description

Product Description

No one thought Sara James, a 30 Rock habitue and Manhattanite through and through, would move to Australia after a long and successful fast-track career reporting from around the globe. But move she did, when her Australian husband Andrew wanted to come home, in a journey that sees her morph from a big-city anchor and correspondent to a small-town mum living an Australian country life.

It is an odyssey filled with drama and adventure, both personal and professional, intentional and accidental. We see Australia through New York eyes, and follow Sara's adventures as she faces head on the challenges of everyday life in a new country with two children, one of whom has special needs.

We laugh with her as she drives on the other side of the road, grapples with the Australian vernacular and its penchant for understatement, and ponders the prevalence of local wildlife that could kill. We cheer for her when she sets up the NBC Australasian bureau at from her home in the Wombat Forest, reporting from a specially constructed sound booth in the garage, located between her husband's Mustang and the chook shed. Most of all, we see a mother, a wife and a reporter determined to create her own Australian memories, not one on loan from her husband.

Warm, uplifting and inspiring, An American in Oz will steal your heart.

Looking for a bit of light reading I bumped into this beauty and I wasn't disappointed. What could have turned out to be a bit of misguided yank condescension in fact portrays my country in a truely honest and delightful manner. Insightful and accurate to a T. Sara James eloquently captures Australia,s unique rural environment and culture and the challenges it brings. Her personal trials are heartening and her devotion to her family shows through and s completely inspiring. Her journalistic and writing skills show though in a clear even hand an reporters eye for fact and detail. This translates into an accurate portrayal that I found hard to pick up any fault in. I did love spotting the inadvertent Australianisms also "our island of a property" is a line only an Aussie could write. Lovely story told credibly and professionally I heartily recommend it to any anyone looking for a perspective into semi rural life in Australia

Overall, a very enjoyable read. It's always interesting to see one's own country viewed through the eyes of a visitor or new settler.
Her writing style is clear and to the point as she doesn't labor over any points unnecessarily.
Her observations are very accurate and towards the end of the book it's apparent that she gained a deeper understanding of the Australian psyche which is fundamentally different to that of the American one.

A true insight into juggling family life in a foreign country and trying to get back into the workforce. Told with humour and a growing understanding of weirdness of Australia.
