Product Description

200 years after the world ends, their future begins.

In 2157, a mysterious gas known as Variant spreads across the globe, killing or mutating most organic life. The surviving humans take refuge in an underground city, determined to return home. But after generations of failures and botched attempts, hope is beginning to dwindle. That is, until a young scientist makes a unique discovery--and everything changes. Suddenly, there's reason to hope again, and it rests within a group of genetically engineered children that are both human and Variant.

Terry is one of these children, modified and trained to endure the harsh conditions of a planet he cannot begin to understand. After years of preparation, Terry thinks he knows what to expect. But the reality is far stranger than anything he can imagine--and what he will become is far more dangerous.

Read the series one Amazon reviewer Donald G. Simpson says: "This is one of the best put together science fiction books I have read in years. The character development is strong from start to finish. There are no loose ends or rabbit trails ... everything ties together. The only regret I had in reading this book was when I looked and saw there were only eight pages left...I can't wait to see if there is a follow up to this great start. You will not believe it is this author's first book!"

The city holds a large group of people who are the descendants of the survivors who managed to be in an underground facility at the time of Jolt - when the earth became unlivable. They have farms and trains and live in apartments, at the age of seven they start school and don't return home for ten years. The story follows a group of kids who have been genetically modified to be able to breathe in the new variant atmosphere. Some of those that make it become stronger, faster, more skilled than they were naturally. At the same time there is a political story concerning the events, it's a shame that a bit more was not devoted to this part of the story because it was interesting.

The kids are all good characters especially Terry, John, Mei and Alex, of the adults I felt that Mara should have been a warmer character, I didn't really understand why she was apparently uncaring to Terry then wanting to know all about him after he was gone, her new job didn't seem to suit her unfeeling nature. Bishop, Ava, Archer, Ross and Nuber were all well for ed characters.

The story moved along rapidly and was hard to put down. An excellent read. The fut

Whoa! What a great read. An underground society, survivors of the Jolt, genetically altering children so they can survive the surface, power struggles, a revolt among the Mothers and the Military, all keep you wanting more. I am fairly new to dystopian scifi, but I found this to be an exciting, well-written story. JN Chaney can really tell a great story and this book proves that without a doubt. His writing was amazing and the story was so clear you can picture exactly where the children are and what they are doing. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the second in the series.

People are just surviving in a crumbling underground bunker, following a catastrophic disaster that has wiped out all life on the surface. Two hundred years ago, a deadly gas had spread through the atmosphere, making the surface uninhabitable.
Mothers become a resource, and genetically modified children are bred to survive on the surface... but all is not what it seems!
I will be waiting to see what unfolds in the next book.
I received a copy of this book, in return for my honest opinion.

This was an interesting read and a good plot. I am looking forward to the next book. I thought the world building was well done and the characters grew more interesting as the book progressed. Definitely worth a read.
