Solving crimes and meeting villains while being a bookworm teenager and living only with his Aunt May.
I personally think it is a great book and I rate it full.

Introducing Spiderman
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 June 2020Verified Purchase
Best viewed on a tablet device for obvious reasons such as the colour artwork on such a device all the frames on a page show up clearly, and if you do need to enlarge any you can have just one frame to the whole screen at a time. Here then we are taken back to the original Spiderman tales, from when he first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1962, and then onwards as he was so popular. There is a short intro piece by Stan Lee at the very beginning of this, and after the stories there is a longer piece showing the development of the character in the first edition, and how some of the illustrations were altered.
The obvious appeal of Spiderman is that when we meet him he is a teenager who is a bit of a nerd, not very sporty and not the most popular in school, thus meaning a lot of people can relate to him, also as he appears to be shy and awkward around the girls. After an accident Peter Parker, our hero takes on the powers of a spider and whereas such a character had in the past had a mentor to teach him and thus became a sidekick, here Peter has to learn everything by himself. Thus after first gaining his powers he does not use them to immediately become a crime fighter until a certain incident happens, resulting in the death of his uncle. Having to become the man of the house for his aunt May so we see someone who has to struggle with juggling his studies, bringing in money and doing his superhero work.
From his first appearance then Spiderman was a hit and continues to be so up unto the present day. Even within the issues we have collected here we see a slight alteration in his costume, and in one issue for some unknown reason we find Peter Parker being altered to Peter Palmer. Meeting the Fantastic Four, coming up against the likes of Doctor Octopus (who with his glasses and hairstyle looks a bit like Elton John), The Sandman, The Vulture, The Chameleon, The Lizard, Electro and others so there is a lot of fun and action packed within the pages of this collection, which will appeal to all Spidey fans as well as those looking for some escapism.
Although once scorned graphic novels and comic books like these have become more respectable as studies show that they do help younger ones to read and progress, increasing their vocabulary and giving them the confidence to go on to more advanced reading. For most of us though the fact is that Spidey and others have always been fun to read and so we continue to do so.

Good enough comic

Not the best comic version/drawings I have seen. Not the worst either.
Simplified version of Spiderman as we know it.
Aimed at older children.

great colllection from the origins of the webslinger. the first couple of stories are a bit tame but they are nearly 60 years old!!! but they soon hit thier stride introducing all the great villans. the format also works well on my tablet for an easy read.

Brilliant storytelling: the birth of Spider-man
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 October 2012Verified Purchase
This edition collects Amazing Fantasy #15 (which alone would cost you £4000+) and Amazing Spider-mans #1-10. These are all fantastic stories.
Unlike Detective Comics #27 (the first appearance of Batman) where you only find out who Batman is in the last pane, Stan and Steve grace you with Spidey's identity on the front cover. This is a High School Peter Parker, a geek, down-trodden by his classmates, who gets bitten by a spider and learns from his uncle that with great power comes great responsibility. You all know the story! Well it starts here!
The stories are brilliant. The cast of villains we know and love/love to hate today are surprisingly quickly introduced in these pages with Doc Ock, The Sandman, The Chameleon, The Vulture, The Lizard, Electro and The Enforcers. That's a lot of first appearances and a lot of action!
Stan and Steve do a great job with the characterisation. One of ASM's great strengths is we've always been interested in his personal life just as much as his superhero life and this starts from the word go. We have Liz Dean as Peter's first crush and then Betty Brant who is still in the comics today. And as you work your way through these volumes there are hints about a Mary-Jane Watson. Bet you just can't wait to meet her. Not in this volume, (actually it's all the way in 5) but her first words went down in history "Face it, tiger... You just hit the jackpot!"
This is a really enjoyable read and highly recommended to Spidey fans and anyone who is thinking of getting into Spidey, because 50 years ago (give or take a month or two) people were starting off with these stories and loving them.
Excelsior! (I couldn't resist)

Probably the best of '60s Marvel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 September 2017Verified Purchase
The Spiderman comics were concerned with the tribulations and dilemmas facing a young and ostensibly gauche teenager who just happened to acquire special powers. This gives the stories the edge over, for instance, the contemporary "commie" -bashing cold war nonsense found in Iron Man especially (rather quaint propaganda). The characters and storylines are appealing and thoughtful and Steve Ditko's art, which can at times resemble the noirish appeal of Will Eisner's "The Spirit" (some of the villains), encapsulates a convincing period feel. This is easily one of Stan Lee's triumphs, along with the (60s contemporary) Fantastic Four, the closest rival for appealing (dysfunctional) characters; a great part of the appeal is the series of dilemmas and insecurities that result from their bestowed gifts.
