Product Description

'Look at her – she’s Hill Clan. Even the Matyrani don’t like them …'

Isaura – little is known about her race, but much is whispered. Born to refugees, she grows up enduring racism and superstition within a community that fears her. She has few friends, and those she treasures. Trapped, she longs for escape to a different life.

Escape is only the beginning of her troubles. Having fled an invading army with her friends, Isaura is faced with heinous choices in order to survive. Secrets from her past emerge to torment her and threaten to destroy all she holds dear. Her struggles forge a bond with an ancient power – a power which may transform or consume her. Old hatreds and superstitions are renewed and at her most vulnerable she learns the true nature of those around her.

Her only hope lies in a foreign land – a land rich in tradition; ruled by three powerful clans. A land with a history marked by warfare; where magic as we know it does not exist. Instead what is here, in abundance, is a more primal power.

Survival carries a high price.

Welcome to Altaica.

This was a great start for a new fantasy series, with a well thought out and designed world and memorable characters. I love Isaura and Pio and their family and friends and was thinking about the story long after I read the last page. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series and finding out what happens next

This story has a rich cast of characters and beautifully detailed world. It somehow manages to skate just close enough to some typical tropes to make you feel you got your money's worth from a real fantasy story without it feeling in the least bit, well, tropey. The pace picks up nicely just at that 2/3 point where most stories get a bit sluggish, and I swallowed the last third almost in one sitting. Looking forward to seeing how Isaura copes with everything that has happened while she was busy being a...well, I'm not one for spoilers!

When I picked this book up I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into , but since reading this I have become a huge fan of the series and am waiting for book 2 to come out . This story is a very fast read and you cant help but be drawn into the story line . Tracy was able to draw you into there world and be able to walk along with them every step of the way .
This story follows a group of villagers as they prepare to leave there homes in fear of an on coming army . They don't think they can stay and fight so they all get onto a barge and start a journey down river to flee from the damage that is coming upon them . They find that it really isn't as simple as they were hoping and they soon find out that living on the barge comes at a cost as well . Relationships get build and some fall apart .
They are soon rescued by a group of fisherman and this is really where the story takes you on a journey of discovery . There is a lot of very strong points in this story as well as very well written characters. Well worth the read !!! I highly recommend this book !

This was an epic adventure to follow and I had a fantastic time being a passenger along for the ride. Although, I did feel that the beginning of the story went a little too slow for my taste but I felt that this was the type of book that you really needed a good foundation. It’s been a really long time since I’ve ready such a good fantasy novel.

I loved the detail of the trip to Altaica. I sometimes felt that I was with Isaura. I loved her as a character and felt frustrated at some of the ways that she was treated and felt so much better for her once she arrived at Altaica.

I was really interested in the parts when we got to have a peek at Altacia. I loved the culture, the people, their traditions as well as their political structure. I think that I would have really enjoyed knowing more about Altacia. Which, I know would come in the next book.

Another thing that I loved about this book as the strong female character, Isaura. There just isn’t that many out there and I get pretty excited to see one and even more when they are part of a great series. I loved her attitude and would be interested in following her story in the next coming books. Another thing that I loved was the way that this story was told. Tracey was phenomenal in telling the story and it just grabs you and doesn’t let go until you’ve finished. Even then I leaves you craving for more. I loved the way that book ended. It wasn’t a completely a cliffhanger but it definitely left you wanting more. For those of you who enjoy a good fantasy then this isn’t a book that you should pass up!
