Maine-based writers Sharon Lee and Steve Miller teamed up in the late 1980s to bring the world the story of Kinzel, a inept wizard with a love of cats, a thirst for justice, and a staff of true power. Since then, the husband-and-wife have written dozens of short stories and twenty novels, most set in their star-spanning Liaden Universe®. Before settling down to the serene and stable life of a science fiction and fantasy writer, Steve was a traveling poet, a rock-band reviewer, reporter, and editor of a string of community newspapers. Sharon, less adventurous, has been an advertising copywriter, copy editor on night-side news at a small city newspaper, reporter, photographer, and book reviewer. Both credit their newspaper experiences with teaching them the finer points of collaboration. Sharon and Steve passionately believe that reading fiction ought to be fun, and that stories are entertainment. Steve and Sharon maintain a web presence at http://korval.com/
The Liaden Universe is a fascinating place with humanity taking a different route to escape an intergalactic war. They lose much of the tech available in that other universe but, now, some of that old tech is emerging. You need to have read the previous books in the series to really enjoy this as it is definitely not stand alone. There a number of threads running through the story and they do not come to an end in this book. So we are left with unanswered questions. Which is why I have only now read this book which I purchased shortly after its release. I now have book 20 to hand so that I can continue with the story! LOL This is definitely for fans of the series only. Earlier books are often stand alone so don't despair.
Another stunning, scintillating and enthralling tale from my favourite universe. Once again I will start rereading the series and try sorrowfully to remain patient and sane until the next book. If you are a Liadin universe novice jump in, they are all special in so many ways. Awsome, exhilarating, wonderful.
It's a coming of age tale where a young woman has to deal with the aftermath of taking on responsibility before time. Action, trade a bit of intrigue and some interesting subplots. I'll be getting the next.
This is about the trade ship Dutiful Passage and it's first journey after the clans move to Surebleak. Master Trader Shan yos Galen has his daughter on board for the first time as cabin girl. She is 13 and will one day be a master trader too, but in clan Korval, you learn from the bottom up. This trip is difficult, dangerous, political and economically important, just what a first voyage needs to be.
