This book came to my attention based on my familiarity with Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where the author resides. I am about 3/4 finished but have to put it aside to read another book for an upcoming book club meeting. Thus far, I have found the character-by-character approach to the story interesting but not captivating, even a bit laborious to get through. My personal preference for a novel is to be intrigued at the outset with a plot that unfolds as one progresses through the book. In this case, it is an interest in character descriptions that is required to prompt a desire to read on. I believe that for those who are familiar with signs of mental health issues, the story would hold their interest to a greater extent than it has for me up to this point.
On the positive side, inasmuch as my travels abroad have been limited to Europe, I am fascinated with the exposure to the Brazilian culture that the book provides. As well, the historical background of the family involved, having its roots in pre- and post- Civil War Alabama, offers a perspective I had not encountered previously.
Finally, I find the writing style to be outstanding in its intensity and effectiveness in leaving the reader with little doubt as to what is being conveyed. No vagueness or guesswork, perplexities or confusion throughout. On this basis I look forward to future endeavors this author undertakes and wish her success in the literary field.
