The Nutcracker ballet. For and by aliens?
Holly Jansen, a young orchestra conductor down on her luck, is secretly hired by the alien king from an alternate Earth to conduct The Nutcracker on Kwadra Island as a Christmas present for his American wife. This big break seems like a Christmas miracle, but after she meets the lead dancer, she wonders if it’s a curse, instead . . .
. . . because the Kwadran queen has secretly ordered star dancer Rafael Sekwa to produce a potlatch dance honoring her husband’s ancestors — on the same date, time, and stage as The Nutcracker. The stubborn genius is determined to do so, no matter what, and Holly finds her ambition melting in the face of her growing admiration . . . and love.

About the author

Edward Hoornaert (a.k.a. Mr. Valentine) is not only a writer, he’s a certifiable Harlequin Hero; he inspired N.Y. Times bestselling author Vicki Lewis Thompson to write her favorite Harlequin Desire, “Mr. Valentine”, which was dedicated to him. In the past, he wrote contemporary romances for Silhouette Books, but these days he writes science fiction adventures—usually with elements of romance. In addition to novelist, he has been a teacher, technical writer, salesman, waiter, janitor, and symphonic oboist.
After having 30 different addresses in his first 28 years, his rolling stone slowed in the mountains of British Columbia and stopped in Tucson, Arizona. His high school sweetheart has been his wife for more years than he has fingers and toes to count. Ed and Judi have four children, a dog, and the galaxy's most delightful grandsons.

I love Nutcracker and could hear the music in my head throughout the book. Learning a little about the story of the Potlatch, the trickster Raven spirit and Mouse Woman was fascinating especially noting the similarities to so many other belief systems. I can never put one of EH’s books down until I’ve finished it and it was the same with this one!

The male hero is also very well-written. The author does a wonderful job of world-building. The Kwadrans aren't just aliens that came out of the human mold. They have a different culture and a different language, different expectations...
A lot of the humor came from the two cultures meeting head-on.
Good ending, too--a happily ever after.
It was a fast read, and I could not put it down. I highly recommend!
