Kristy McCaffrey's Alice, Bride of Rhode Island is the best sweet romance I've read in a long time!! I hated to put this book down as I was immediately drawn to Alice and James. Alice never liked her stepfather, so when her mother died and her stepfather tried to force her into marriage, she ran away and found work in a factory. But the factory burned down and many of the girls are answering newspaper ads for mail order brides. Alice is no exception, except the ad she answers takes her back to her home state of Rhode Island and not out west. Her intended is Frank, but Frank decides to stick with his girlfriend and talks his older brother, James, into marrying Alice. Alice's stepfather is the man who cheated Frank and James' father and since James has long dreamed of evening the score, he agrees. But what he doesn't count on in is falling in love with Alice and her turning the tables on him.

I loved these two. Right from the start, it's clear they belong together. Alice is young and innocent and is enamored with James, who does his best to keep her at arm's length. Learning she is to inherit a fishing company in a few months, he's determined to keep their marriage in name only, claim her inheritance and then divorce her. But the more he learns about her, the more he's drawn to her and rethinking his decision regarding their marriage. Toss in Alice's stepfather, her grandmother and an unexpected ally to help Alice realize her dreams and determine if James really does love her and you'll keep turning the pages as fast as I did!

So. Now we have mail order brides for areas where women are plentiful and not just for the West? Maybe. But this book illustrates completely why I HATE the current authors' ideas that ALL authors are created equal, so let's share our ideas.
While I will suspend my disbelief and accept the original situation that the author establishes as the basis of her plot, I will NOT ignore human nature. All characters need to react normally. In this case, a mail order bride goes to meet her "groom" and is spurned by the groom because his original girl friend and he make up. So the BROTHER who is not looking for a bride and doesn't like his brother's welching on the bargain, decides to marry this woman.
Wow. Where to start. First, marriage: it was forever back then; furthermore, NO MAN who is emotionally available is going to be willing to commit so prematurely ABSENT a motivational factor. As a motivational factor, "my brother is an ass" isn't working for me. Second, what book have the other reviewers been reading? Were they paid to like the book? Or do they think that the reviews are for the benefit of the author, who will probably not ever read the reviews?

DEAR AUTHORS:
Please write about things you know about. Please do not share your plot ideas with others, as if I like your writing and I like your ideas, I want to read YOUR books. Exceptionally interesting plot ideas have been ruined by inept handling and poor writing.
I understand that sometimes the blurb describing the book is written better than the book itself. But I have noticed that this situation is much more frequent when the plot idea is shared.

Alice and James came together under false assumptions.

Alice was sent off to boarding school at a young age then she lost her job due to a fire in the factory. Now trying to start a new life with a new husband that wants to live in separate bedrooms. Will she ever find happiness? Why did her husband marry her if he doesn't want to be with her in all ways? Is there another reason he married her? Will they be able to find love together?

Alice is a strong woman and will do what she has to do to survive. Even if it means doing it on her own.

The story was good and made you stand behind this wonderful woman and cheer her on in this small fishing village where she grew up.

I liked how the author described the state and what business went on there, fishing!

I realized lately, that I had somehow missed this book when all 50 books, 50 states and 50 brides, came out. I want to congratulate those that founded the concept of having many different authors write these books and thereby getting us acquainted with new authors. I've read the prequel so knew what made all these women suddenly unemployed and I've read some of the books by authors that I'm familiar with. This particular book had its moments of humor, it definitely hit my button on women's rights, and above all, I always enjoy a book that seems to give the men involved some of their come-up-pens in the world of business as well as family. When a woman is to inherit a business or money itself, we should all become suspect of those around us. It is the same with the Lottery of today. All of a sudden becoming someone's best friend should raise eyebrows. This is the storyline of this particular American Mail-Order Bride book and I congratulate Ms. McCaffrey for doing a great job of writing and keeping Alice and Lillie focused on their futures. Thanks for a book that made me smile.

Kristy McCaffrey has outdone herself with her Mail Order Bride book, Alice, bride of Rhode Island. I was most pleasantly surprised that she constructed a feasible and interesting plot about a woman who needed to be a mail order bride, but who didn't go west of the Mississippi to be one. Her detailed and well-researched writing about Rhode Island, a place I've never visited, brought the book alive for me. The beginning of the book immediately hooked me, as the author explained why this particular heroine, Alice, was able to return to the state of her birth. The plot was complex with some suspense elements and unexpected turns, too. What I especially liked was the complexity of the characters. Alice, the heroine, has had a mixed life, a good life, so long as her father lived but not such a good one as a ward of her stepfather or when she runs away. Her life experiences have made her wise and flexible beyond her years, but she still doubts her strength. James, is a hero is swoon for, but he, too, is a complex character. Initially bent on revenge and getting back what is rightfully his, James has to make some hard decisions about what is most important to him, his lovely mail order bride or his original intentions. The more I read of Ms. McCaffrey's books, the more impressed I am by her depth of characters. This is an interesting and enjoyable romance read!
