This book is not suitable for beginners wanting to learn Algebra.
Hugh introduces each topic with a brief description and a couple of worked examples, then throws you in the deep end with a series of difficult exercises. The answers are in the back of the book but there is no step by step guide to explain how he arrived at the final solution.
Thank goodness there are online Algebra calculators available that allow you to plug in your equation and see a detailed breakdown of the calculation. Hugh doesn't mention the fact that these calculators exist. Perhaps he assumes that we are clever enough to figure it out in our heads. Not so easy for a beginner.
Many of the exercises are presented as a word problem and require you to transpose the question into an equation. If you struggle to form the right equation then you are left floundering. I'm sure this is a skill acquired through practice but the beginner needs more guidance than that offered by this book.
Overall this book is okay for revision but definitely not suitable for teaching Algebra to beginners.
