It took an entire day to figure out how to install it & get it to actually register & visibly show up on my machine in my DAW, initially it was confusing as it wasn't even in human interface devices or audio devices, in fact it was in the unspecified catagory for hours while I scoured the net & forums for any info!? Its seems Akai are not very good at either writing clear instructions or helping customers directly, mostly generic replies with erroneous info & repetitive wording... Eventually like as if some sort of dark magic was cast over the entire situation, it just decided it was actually a human interface & audio device!? Inexplicable "fixes" are something I do not enjoy experiencing, because if something does go wrong in future (which it will) then no-one will have any idea how to fix it. Suffice to say I'm happy it's (sort of) working but it took way more effort than just "plug-n-play"...
Additionally I couldn't (& still can't) figure out where to get all the additional software that's supposed to come with this device ie: Hybrid 3, Sonivox Wobble & MPC Essentials, which is a tad annoying but hey it's fine I suppose, none of it is important anyway...
I'm going to connect it to a MiDi testing device asap, I believe that the joystick may not be registering horizontal movement to its full range, vertically seems to be working fine. Will add the info in an edit after date of testing!
As far as the build quality is concerned, it's quite flimsy all around, I'm especially concerned about having to be extremely delicate in general, but especially with the 8 onboard Q-Link Knobs, they feel extremely lightweight & have allot of give & rattle in their movement which is a sure sign that they will either snap or detach with even the slightest amount of pressure!
The Keeeeeeeeys, by the power of Grayskull the keys are abysmal... I have nothing even remotely nice to say about the design of the keys or the materials or how they connect to the plate inside or how they activate touch sensitivity or the level of spring-back or the fact that I believe that the entire key rig seems like a massive design flaw, many customers have reported keys snapping off entirely & oddly when using very little pressure I can feel how hollow & flimsy they are, even more oddly it's the same key people are reporting broken!? The keyboard action is super cheap, hollow & makes an awful plastic noise when in use, I can see I will have to be using this very carefully if it's to have any lifespan!
Overall for £80 the Akai MPK Mini MKII LE Black isn't terrible but it's not great either, I think I'll be looking at M-Audio or Novation for decent budget equipment from now on!
5/10 Took forever to get working, longer to apply functions in DAW & build quality is a huge let down & keys are simply a design flaw... If you need a quick, cheap, lightweight & small MPC Keyboard then the Mini MKII has get you covered!
I combine it with Ableton Live and after an extremely tough learning curve, I've managed to get enough functionality from it to make it worth the price. I'm very tech-oriented and I can usually discern my way around various gear, but it is definitely not beginner friendly.
YouTube tutorials have been invaluable, so be prepared to watch a good few of them to get started.
That said, it is a wonderful piece of gear and very much a decent quality product. The more expensive Novation boards are probably even better, but this one fit my needs just fine and is a fair price for what you get.
Mine came bundled with lots of software too, a nice bonus. Recommended.
This was a surprise Christmas present for my daughter. Parcel came without any outer wrapping or box. Address label stuck to box !!!!
Daughter opened door, accepted parcel, and now it's not surprise!!!!
