Exciting Adventure Story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 December 2020Verified Purchase
I read this book in the early 70's, it was published in 1964. I couldn't remember much of the plot except that it had a connection with the Spanish Riding School. I was pleased to come across it again in Kindle. I would describe it as a good old fashioned adventure story. The characters are likeable although possibly a bit unrealistic. The writing is beautifully descriptive, the plot is faced paced and the tension and excitement is maintained until the very end. It is pure escapism and as an added bonus it has horses in it with some interesting details about the Spanish Riding School. That was a big plus for me. Highly recommended for readers who like horses and adventure stories.

I came to Mary Stewart after hearing a discussion on Women's Hour rather late in life as I gather most people discovered her as teenagers. She is a prolific writer and I have now read most of her novels. She specializes in excellent fast-moving plots and sympathetic young women as heroines. This novel has it all: Austria, castles, a child in danger and numerous car chases. I loved it.

I almost didn't read this...

...as I used to dislike theto me unnatural 'dancing' of horses, but I love Mary Stewart's books. She's educated me about the Spanish Riding School, its purpose and history. As in all her books, the characters are lively and engaging, the story gripping. I'll never forget the scene of the old horse dancing in the moonlight to the distant music - it brought tears to my eyes.

A keeper

Like all her 50s and 60s thrillers, fascinating incidental portrait of the period and as usual a very resourceful, attractive (but modest) heroine and unusual love story - she already has a husband. The Austrian setting also really well drawn.

Good plot

I came across this author recently and liked her writings. So far this book was the best out of the three I have read, the other two being - Touch not the cat and The Ivy tree. They all have good plots and keep you guessing but this book had more intrigue and you are never sure which way it will turn next.
