I already have 2 other videos of Agrippina, so I really did not need another but I figured with Patricia Bardon and Danielle De Niese, I had to have one more. While the sound and picture are first rate, I don't think I will be watching this one very often due to the fact that they have replaced most of the trouser rolls with countertenors.
Some people apparently like the sound of the countertenor voice but I am not one of them. Most of them sound like nails on a chalkboard. Off hand, I can only think of 2 that are even bearable but neither of them are in this performance. I do not mind hearing a countertenor once in a while but this performance has gone overboard in replacing virtually all the trouser rolls with men who do not sing very well.
If you like countertenors, you will probably enjoy this disc. Otherwise my first choice would be the version with Suzanne Geb in the lead roll or the older version with Veronique Gens as my second choice. This version has excellent picture and sound quality and the performance is pretty good overall.
We see so few operas of Handel staged these days that I hate to give a bad review. If there were not other versions of Agrippina already, I would have given this a higher rating.
