Patience has always been Caleb Whitetail's strength. Quiet and unassuming is what you see with the GFI investigator, but the blood boils hot right under the surface. He kept his distance for years only to see the woman who has held his attention almost lose her life not just once, but twice. He is done standing in the shadows.

Katie Acker, once a tough and athletic security specialist now struggles daily to walk. The closest to family she has are her colleagues at GFI. Especially the man who saved her life and always has her back. So when she unwittingly becomes the focus of a Mexican cartel, it’s no big surprise she finds him right by her side.

With the combustive change in their deepening bond, Katie and Caleb do not see the oncoming danger - until it surrounds them.

Freya Barker is a completely new author to me and I have to say that the main reason I picked up Against Me was because I am meeting her at a signing in a little bit over two short weeks. Well, I have to say that I thank my lucky stars :) The book started a little bit slow for me but once I pushed over the first 30-40 pages, I found myself engrossed into the story and the characters. I loved the smart entanglement between suspense and romance, between danger and love :)

Caleb and Katie are quite interesting characters. Being in their late thirties and early forties, they are a little bit older that the characters I usually read about. But that definitely didn't stop me from connecting with them and their problems. Freya Barker managed to express Katie and Caleb's feelings in a way that made me feel like I can see their story through my own eyes.

Through the book I admired Katie's strength and determination. It was amazing to read how she slowly becomes herself again and finds the one thing that could heal her wound - love.Considering her past and trials, I can only imagine how difficult it was for her to open her heart, even if it was for her best friend. But his persistence and support, his love and protectiveness, Caleb definitely managed to prove that he deserves her trust and is worth the risk. And let's be honest. That delicious alpha ex-ranger is definitely worth the risk :D

The suspenseful part of the story definitely kept me on my toes pretty much all of the time. There were some twists and turns that I didn't expect, and that's not something I experience often ;) I loved the danger and the fast paced action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar writing in a superb series 7 April 2015

Against Me by Freya Barker

5 star review by Nicole McCurdy @ Nic’s Novel Idea

Serendipitous. That is the one word that springs to mind when I think Freya Barker. I reviewed her second book of this remarkable series for another book blog (one I still review for) several months ago and since that day I’ve followed every step and word this talented woman has written. I also believe that because I am a huge fan of her work that the pressure is all the more intense for her to follow up the last fantastic novel with an even better one or at the very least an equally fantastic one. When I reached the end of page one I knew Against Me would be golden.
Here’s a quick snippet of what you can expect from this action-packed epic romance novel: Unrequited love, years old. A cartel involved in murder, drugs smuggling and kidnapping. A strong-willed survivor battling to regain everything she lost. Family secrets and lots and lots of delicious sweaty, thigh-clenching, wipe-the-drool-and-look-of-jealousy-off-your-face sex scenes.
What I love Freya for most of all is her ability to create these stubborn-ass, independent, balls to the wall superheroines. Katie’s inner and outer strength in dealing with the devastating aftermath of her incident from the previous book is commendable and as Caleb says she has ‘beauty, balls and heart, the whole package’. She may have her ups and downs as well as having had her heart broken repeatedly but it doesn’t close her off, she’s still capable of loving to the fullest and of pushing herself to be the best she can be. Helping her along the way is beautiful Caleb. A man so full of love and admiration for the heroic Katie that he waited patiently on the sidelines and aided her when she needed it and even when she didn’t want. He’s her pep-talker, her friend, her heart, her orgasm donor and her biggest supporter all in one unbelievably sexy swaggering gun-toting package.

‘“I...I just don’t know that I’m worth all this,” she mutters.
“Worth to whom? To me? When all I could call you was my friend, you were invaluable. Now that you’ve let me become more, you’re worth everything and anything. This is what friends do, what family does; what lovers do. I get as much of a kick out of giving you some of the tools you need to grab hold of your freedom as you probably do.”’

It has the trademark suspense and drama that I would associate with Freya’s series. Even with such dysfunctional and multi-faceted characters the storyline never loses ground, one isn’t sacrificed for the other. With every secret revealed the action and intrigue just gathers momentum until you’re swept up in the whole complex story and rooting for Caleb to finally win Katie’s heart. Superb and flawless characterisation and writing as always with stellar dialogue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written. 1 April 2015

Caleb, might look, and act, like a hard as nails nan, but on the inside he is just a big old teddy bear. Katie is one tough lady, Even in her disabled state she can still take care of herself. The feelings these two have between each other is explosive, I had some laughs and giggles, nail biting, but loved every page of this book, The characters in all of Freya's books seem so real. You feel like you know them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cedar Tree, one of my fave series!!! 3 April 2015

The Cedar Tree series is fast becoming one of my all time faves....Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first two books I've been looking forward to reading Caleb & Katie's story, and once again, Freya didn't disappoint with Against Me!!!

We had met both Katie and Caleb earlier in the series but didn't know a huge amount about either of them. As this story starts Katie is recovering from an accident and Caleb is there as the concerned 'friend & co-worker' though that's far from what he wants from the woman.

Neither have had a great life and both have some issues and problems that still need to be sorted out. Katie in particular has an uphill battle on her hands, both physically and mentally, but if she can see herself from Caleb's POV she'll do just fine.
There's loads of action, mystery and suspense. We catch up with the couples & characters from previous books and meet again the leads from the next book.

For me, part of the beauty of these books lies in the people. Rather than wealthy, drop-dead gorgeous, perfectly formed 20-somethings that we often come across in romance stories, the characters Freya writes about feel real and are an age that those of us heading towards our 40s & 50s can relate to.
Flawed, a little damaged and broken, they are far from perfect but they are perfect together. I love the honesty, openness and acceptance that they show and don't get me started on the sex scenes - talk about HOT - Caleb is one dirty, knicker-melting, sexy bugger (lucky Katie!!) who doesn't hold back from showing K exactly what she does to him regardless of her disability.

Caleb & Katie, Seb & Arlene and Gus & Emma remind us that 'family' doesn't always mean those we have blood ties to and sometimes those closest and most important to us, the ones who care and will move mountains to help us, are quite often the 'family' we build around ourselves as we grow and time passes.

I can't wait to see what Frey has in store for us with Naomi & Joe in the next instalment of this fantastic series!!!

Against Me is a definite read for those who have picked up Slim To None and Hundred to One. If you haven't tried the series yet, go grab a copy and lose yourself in the lives of the residents of Cedar Tree..

5.0 out of 5 stars Can Caleb and Katie find their way to each other safely??? 1 April 2015
By Pam Buchanan - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Throughout this series Caleb we have gotten to see a little of his caring and compassionate side. The way he as stepped up and spent so much time with Katie during her recovery was not a surprise to me. It was fun to see his alpha male come out a little when he was pushing Katie to get back into existence and leave the hospital. His take charge work ethics coming out in full force. And when he was forced to face his past head on, I think it was a little easier for him to do know he was helping to keep Katie safe. As much as he wants to look after and keep her safe he knows that she is not willing to sit back and let them take over, so he keeps her involved in the investigation as much as possible. It is not a wonder that Caleb would be my favorite of the series so far.

We had only seen little glimpse of Katie in the previous books. I can't even imagine the devastation of going from the fierce GFI agent to being injured so badly you are confined to a wheelchair. I think Katie's character growth is the most substantial so far. As her past dictated she truly felt she was not worthy of true friendship and love. It takes her some serious soul searching along with a little friendly push to see everyone is worthy. When you find the right people to include in your life they won't care about the past but more about the person you have become. To be able to sort through all this while trying to watch your six and figure out who the hell it trying to kill your ass and why. I am certain that I would have succumbed to the stress, where Katie just kept pushing along.

Watching Caleb and Katie open up to each other and find their way to happiness was superb. Freya, they just keep getting better and better. I am sitting on pins and needles waiting to see what you have in store for us next with the Cedar Tree gang.

Freya does it yet again. Against Me is wonderfully written with enough heat to keep Ya warm at night. Caleb is the type of man that once he falls in love with both his heart and soul and committed to that person he will do anything to protect them. This book shows us that two mature, somewhat damaged people can muddle thru life day in day out content not knowing what they are missing until it smashes down right in front of them. Once Caleb reveals his feelings for Katie all bets are off after a serious accident he almost loses her. Katie knows she can always rely on her co-worker turn friend but until he shows her his hand she never acknowledges those feelings deep down Inside. Each of of Freya's books gets better and better. Her men make you tingle and wish they would come off the pages as the women show their inner strength and independence which is refreshing. These are real folks just like you and me. real with everyday life issues, illnesses, emotional upsets that just make it feel like you are part of their stories. A must read series and excellent book. Congratulations to Freya on yet another phenomenal book.
