Whilst on a job, looking after Emma, Katie goes through a life changing event and its from this we see a remarkable change in Katie and Caleb is there with her all the way.
At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to warm to Katie, I had my hackles up from book 1. (Yes, you need to read it!) But in the end, Caleb and Katie are my two down right favs out of this Cedar Tree group of friends. Throw in suspense at every turn, a gorgeous brother and a pet and you get down right gooey! Loved it.
Caleb and Katie are quite interesting characters. Being in their late thirties and early forties, they are a little bit older that the characters I usually read about. But that definitely didn't stop me from connecting with them and their problems. Freya Barker managed to express Katie and Caleb's feelings in a way that made me feel like I can see their story through my own eyes.
Through the book I admired Katie's strength and determination. It was amazing to read how she slowly becomes herself again and finds the one thing that could heal her wound - love.Considering her past and trials, I can only imagine how difficult it was for her to open her heart, even if it was for her best friend. But his persistence and support, his love and protectiveness, Caleb definitely managed to prove that he deserves her trust and is worth the risk. And let's be honest. That delicious alpha ex-ranger is definitely worth the risk :D
The suspenseful part of the story definitely kept me on my toes pretty much all of the time. There were some twists and turns that I didn't expect, and that's not something I experience often ;) I loved the danger and the fast paced action. And that combined with the love story between Caleb and Katie developing in the middle of everything, just made the book that much more exciting :)
In a few words, I definitely found the story intriguing and captivating. I quite enjoyed myself reading it and I will be definitely checking this author's other works :) I can't wait to find our more about her characters :) And I definitely can't wait to meet her ;) Lucky me :D

This story flew the cedar tree flag perfectly. Every bit as fabulous as the former books, I just knew we wouldn't be let down. Ms' Barkers writing just gets better and better and her skills in weaving her story place her as one of my favourate three authors ever. I rarely read out of this genre, but I dont need to. For me I have a selection of authors I like, and a small selection I love and Freya Barker is in that trio.
You will find yourself with new neighbors you wish were real, but are real enough to invest your care in. You will want to be a part of the story and not just a reader but will quickly see within chapters its impossible not to feel the emotions the story pulls from you and you will sink into a cushion of addictive enjoyment. It's lovely not to have a young couple wring you dry right until the last chapter, but rather enjoy a more mature couple become a couple early in the book, and then watch them grow together. He's a sexxxy beast of a man, and she is right there with him as they explore and experience things as a couple old enough to want each other and young enough to still fulfill their needs. And the back story is amazingly good with worries, sadness joy and relief.. A fabulous addition to a fabulous series.
Each book is stand alone but trust me when I tell you one is not enough i meant it...so read from the first book and savor all that is cedar tree. Thank you very much Ms' Barker and I just can not wait for the next in the series. The sneak peek had me spitting nails! Well done.
We had met both Katie and Caleb earlier in the series but didn't know a huge amount about either of them. As this story starts Katie is recovering from an accident and Caleb is there as the concerned 'friend & co-worker' though that's far from what he wants from the woman.
Neither have had a great life and both have some issues and problems that still need to be sorted out. Katie in particular has an uphill battle on her hands, both physically and mentally, but if she can see herself from Caleb's POV she'll do just fine.
There's loads of action, mystery and suspense. We catch up with the couples & characters from previous books and meet again the leads from the next book.
For me, part of the beauty of these books lies in the people. Rather than wealthy, drop-dead gorgeous, perfectly formed 20-somethings that we often come across in romance stories, the characters Freya writes about feel real and are an age that those of us heading towards our 40s & 50s can relate to.
Flawed, a little damaged and broken, they are far from perfect but they are perfect together. I love the honesty, openness and acceptance that they show and don't get me started on the sex scenes - talk about HOT - Caleb is one dirty, knicker-melting, sexy bugger (lucky Katie!!) who doesn't hold back from showing K exactly what she does to him regardless of her disability.
Caleb & Katie, Seb & Arlene and Gus & Emma remind us that 'family' doesn't always mean those we have blood ties to and sometimes those closest and most important to us, the ones who care and will move mountains to help us, are quite often the 'family' we build around ourselves as we grow and time passes.
I can't wait to see what Frey has in store for us with Naomi & Joe in the next instalment of this fantastic series!!!
Against Me is a definite read for those who have picked up Slim To None and Hundred to One. If you haven't tried the series yet, go grab a copy and lose yourself in the lives of the residents of Cedar Tree..
Caleb is one seriously sexy alpha and Katie is a kick ass strong feisty lady.
Freya gives you humour, romance, suspense as well as some hot monkey sex ;)
Add in a dog and the rest of the Cedar Tree gang and it makes for a brilliantly written story that will draw you in, that keeps you wanting more! Each book is a standalone but I seriously doubt once you've read one that you wouldn't want to read them all!
Can't wait for the next book in the Cedar Tree series!
Caleb, a man of patience. We met him at the beginning of the series and knew then that we would fall far him, hard.
I wasn't sure about Katie when we met her in Slim to None, but how wrong was I? I loved her.
Really good book that I will enjoy rereading
