Product Description

THERE’S A WHOLE LOT OF BAD BETWEEN KANA AND BAZZ . . .

That’s what they say on Bazz, that the “Deep Sea”, the open space between the two planets, is cursed and full of bad dreams—but nobody ever listens to people from Bazz, do they?

Paymaster Stenstrom, Private Taara and Lord A-Ram struggle to navigate the Seeker, an old warbird, through the shipping lanes to Bazz. If the Paymaster can’t get to Bazz with his cargo of brandy, he loses the ship and will probably end up in jail as well.

Jail? If only . . . The three adventurers are about to discover the old farfetched mariner stories are very real and that the Devil himself waits for the unwary in dark places where there is no help.

The Circle closes in on Stenstrom, Taara and A-Ram, and its judgment for them is far worse than any jail cell. The Seeker is about of become just another ship that set sail from safe shores and was never heard from again, unless . . .

The Belmont Saga concludes in this heartbreaking and action-packed tale of friendship and dedication, of vile evil and hopeless terror, and that sometimes help for those gone astray comes from the most unlikely of places.

This book is fantastic. It almost saddens me that the first book in a series by Ren Garcia is always so-so then the books following are amazing. It makes me fear that too many people stop at the first book and don't bother to read on. I have to emphasis: READ ON!! It is totally worth it in the end!

I love the surprising connections between story elements. I love the character developments. The fantasy world is captivating and far reaching. The whole time, I wanted to read more and learn more and see where the story would lead.

I like it better if I just ignore any type of romantic relationship elements (because I hate anything that appears like a love triangle). I read to escape the woes of like. I'd rather not read about a character who is heartbroken and left unresolved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Against the Druries 27 May 2013

I hope that Mr. Garcia will continue this series of books. The style he writes with is amazing. Some books can be read without any imagination or immersion. Not so with Mr. Garcia's books. I find that I'm immersed in the story right from page 1. I find his blend of science fiction particularly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic adventure from Ren Garcia 31 October 2014
By C. Peace - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Against the Druries sees the conclusion of the mission Paymaster Stenstrom embarked upon in Sands of the Solar Empire - namely, get the Admiral’s brandy to Bazz and secure the captain’s seat of the stripped out, decayed and abandoned old warbird, Seeker. However, it was never going to be as simple as that and in this novel, Stenstrom is up against some pretty vicious and menacing adversaries. The Druries turn out to be much more than they first appear, and in a very clever and twisted way. The legend of the Fiend of Calvert and the Mad Lord of Walther finds its true place in the adventure, as does the mysterious Woman in Gray. The vile Kestrals make another appearance, still up to their old tricks of skinning and deforming people in their Tanks to turn them into monstrosities. The natures, strengths, and flaws of Stenstrom’s companions are explored in a more meaningful way, their contributions to his efforts finding their worth. The pace is unrelenting, and doesn’t suffer from the slight slowing of Stentrom’s backstory, which did affect the first novel (although not enough to spoil my enjoyment.)

I was intrigued by Lilly’s nature and the effect she had on Stenstrom, and also by Knife. The Sisterhood continues to be both a beneficent and enigmatically malicious presence - their true purposes, as ever, clouded in mystery. The Epilogue provides an intriguing onward thread that I’m sure the author will exploit very soon. I shall definitely be reading more from Mr Garcia!

Highly recommended by Cas Peace, author of the Artesans of Albia fantasy series.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Edgy Joyride 7 May 2013
By Chantal Boudreau - Published on Amazon.com
If Ren Garcia writes it, I'll be reviewing it. He never fails to impress me with his world-building skills, original plotlines and interesting characters. Despite the fact that his writing ventures into genres I don't usually enjoy reading, like steampunk and science fiction, his work always manages to entertain me.

Against the Druries is the second in The Belmont Saga - Seventh in his League of Elder series - and I found it as equally satisfying as the book preceding it. I'm not going to go into any great plot detail as a lot of what happens in this book would be considered spoilers for the first book, but I will touch on some of the highlights.

One of the first things I liked about this saga was that aside from the protagonist, who is the larger-than-life classic hero typical to Ren's stories, the majority of the other characters in the book are the type of flawed individuals who appeal to my sensibilities. I was especially drawn to A-Ram, the true underdog sort with something to prove, not just for himself but on behalf of his family. The rough-edged Tarra also made for some necessary comic-relief during very tense times.

While Ren's not afraid to offer up the darker side of things, this book seemed particularly dark. I prefer my reads grim and messy (not the writing, but the storyline,) so this aspect made me happy. It also leaves us with some rather frightening prospects for stories to come.

The most surprising part of the book was the villains and the revelation of their true nature. They certainly aren't what they seem to be at first, providing an even greater threat to our heroes and their objectives than first anticipated.

In all, this was an intense, shadowy adventure, filled with intrigue, excitement and extreme ups and down - an edgy joyride. Definitely five stars from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar Sequel to Sands of the Solar Empire 5 July 2014
By Raven Bower - Published on Amazon.com
Another fabulous adventure from Ren Garcia!

Ren's characters are visceral, vivid, three dimensional beings who spring to life on the page. They're all flawed, interesting and exciting. He gives the reader enough to know the characters and yet, not know them so completely that they can't be surprised. The balance is masterfully done.

The world building in the League of Elder is solid and just as balanced as his characters. The worlds and the space they inhabit are well conceived and come off as real as our own world.

As for the plot, well, you're going to have to read it ;) I can't say much more than what's said in the blurb without giving away mysteries that are better discovered during the reading.

That said, Ren's storytelling ability is just as balanced as the world building. No dull parts or dragging scenes, it's all focused and optimized to keep the reader turning the pages.

If you love new worlds and adventure, it is a must read.
