The Safety and Convenience AfterShokz Strives to Provide
Runners powered by their favourite sound track but still able to hear the traffic around, biker hearing both GPS navigation and cars approaching from behind, office worker enjoying music still maintaining communication with colleagues, mom listening to her podcast but won't miss a single sound bit of her baby in the cradle, vision impaired going around the town hearing both GPS and surroundings… Better yet, there is nothing in their ears.
We hear bone conduction sound while eating, drinking and scratching our head, etc. We also hear ourselves talking partially through bone conduction. That's why we perceive our own voice differently from what other people hear. Taking advantage of this natural phenomenon, bone conduction transducers guide micro-vibration through the cheekbones to the inner ears, delivering sound without plugging or covering them.

I'd been reading about bone conduction headphones for some time now but was waiting to more reviews and a sale at under AU$200 (RRP AU$240). Most reviews from various forums will list a number of the AfterShoks brand, which was positive in my books and led to my decision. I eventually spent $50 extra to go for the Air instead of its predecessor, the Titanium due to it's weight/size and a few updates/improvements according to other reviewers.
The Airs have performed to my expectations:
- Clear audio (including voice calls)
- Great for podcasts
- Acceptable for music (not designed for it)
- Band feels durable (too soon to tell)
- Strong bluetooth connection (compared to my Shure Bluetooth SE-112)
- High volume without audio breaking
- Comfortable fit
- Band is semi-stiff so it's not comfortable in certain positions (eg laying in bed)
- Significant vibration testing at high volume (caused a bit of nausea after 5 minutes)
- Device turned off after 2 or 3 warnings for low battery (approximately after 20 minutes; Shures last about 40 minutes)
Bone conduction headphones are designed to be aware of a person's surroundings yet being able to enjoy ambient audio. Accordingly, as all other reviewers have reported, do not expect music audio (especially bass reproduction) to be in the same league as On/Over-Ear or In-Ear headphones and earphones - IT IS NOT DESIGNED FOR THAT PURPOSE.
I work in an open office and my position requires me to talk with my colleagues throughout the day. When I need to focus for a project, I use my earphones or headphones (Shure, Bose, Sennheiser, Bluedio etc - I have purchased a few of each brand over the years) where I can enjoy better sound reproduction for music and silence my surroundings.
Overall, I am continually amazed at bone conduction technology and have enjoyed the AfterShokz Trekz Air thoroughly. It is a specific use headphone that I will be enjoying for the office, light gardening, jogging and cycling (to be tested).
Per my headline, this and my Shures will be my daily "Go-To" audio devices.
If you need to be aware of ambient sound for safety reasons there's no alternative, but I like to wear them any time I want to be aware my surroundings, even if not strictly necessary, such as when walking outdoors or cooking.
Update: after using a bit longer I've found one major problem with them, I find them inaudible when it's windy. I guess this problem also applies to earbuds but I've gone back to using in-ears that seal the ear canal somewhat when there's any wind at all
The treks air are light weight, comfortable and the battery life surprising coinciding their size.
I do hope these airs last longer than the titanium ones over previously killed-only time will tell.
The sound quality is great on these, and not having your ears blocked does mean you can hear other sounds around you. Which brings me to the only downside. If you're outside and it's very noisy, then good luck hearing anything. The fact that your ears are open to the environment often means anything you're listening too can be drowned out by the surrounding noise.
Call quality is fantastic, no one has complained about difficulty in hearing me, and they seem to have a good range, allowing me to wander around without being tethered to my phone.
Battery life is nice, but dependent on use, you will find yourself charging the headphones every two or three days.
I do find that despite their light weight, they do press a tiny bit on the side of my head, and it can take a good few minutes to get used too that pressure. Also, these might have been made for people with giant heads, as there is a large gap at the back of my head, meaning I can't use these on a high back chair and rest my head on it.
Overall great headphones if you can't use earbuds. Good battery life and decent comfort.

Eben, weil man Umgebungsgeräusche mitbekommt.
However like every other Aftershokz product, they have serious problems with their batteries so these failed and stopped charging during their warranty period. Aftershokz Custer service must be very aware of this issue as they issues a replacement immediately, but as expected from a product with serious design defects, the replacements failed once more 9 months later. Unfortunately these were our of warranty so the company refused to replace them only offering me a money off voucher for their latest model.
Like a mug, as I do enjoy training with these, I bought the newest model anyway a few months later. These have just also failed with the same issue, fortunately under warranty again so I am expecting a replacement,
It's a real shame that they own all the patents on this technology so there is no viable alternative out there.
In short, they're great, while they work, but they all have serious design flaws which mean that they eventually fail so don't expect more than 12 months out of any pair.
There is no bass what so ever, unless you use the ear plugs... Which kind of defeats the point of these... Even then they sound like a sub £10 pair of in-ears... On the subject of defeating the point of these if you have the volume up to any sort of audible level you won't be able to hear what's going on around you.
There is sound leakage... In fact you would probably get the exact same effect if you just stuck a pair of cheap ear buds to your cheeks and turned them up a bit louder than normal... That's basically what this product is.
This is a totally useless product, seriously don't waste your money.
For me, I wish the battery life was a little better. I get disappointed when it runs out (usually in the middle of a piece of work). PS. I cannot tell you how long it last, as I work with them on, and I switch off and back on in between jobs.
If you're looking for a great pair of headphones, something unique.. These are it.
If you dont like ear buds.. Still these..
And if you really need not to wear headphones at work - yep these again. I can crank the sound up on these and never miss a work enquiry or phone call.
Love them. So much so, looking at another pair.
