When I first started reading After We Fall, I thought, oh no, it's too much like another book I read some time back...a PR person was required to boost the profile of an organic farm and love bloomed between angsty farm guy and beautiful city chick. But as things got rolling in this book, it was obvious that it stood on it's own and there were enough differences to make it very readable and engaging.
What I liked about After We Fall was the mix of warmth, drama, heartbreak, sexiness and humour all rolled into one book. It's also a fast-paced, quick read with plenty of good dialogue to move the plot along. Jack was a tortured, broken man carrying wounds and grief that no one should have to bare, so we get (and forgive) his abrupt and confrontational persona. He was also solitary, handsome, built and had a tender and sweet side that he only showed to a select few. City-girl, Margot came from wealth, but she wasn't always that impressed with those of her kind and, besides, there's a lot more to her than meets the eye. Disenchanted, she survived the disappointment of a flippant fiancé (now ex) a year previously and hoped there was more to life and love.
Soon, despite the challenges, Margot and Jack responded to their undeniable electric attraction. Gradually, the attraction built to more and while I don't want to give away spoilers there were several simple, but poignant scenes that were touching and changed the course of the characters' lives. However, there was a necessary journey that Jack, especially, had to travel as his 'readiness' was an essential element to his ability to move forward, and that couldn't be rushed. Melanie Harlow handled that point well and it was wonderful to see how she guided our hero towards a second chance. In fact, Melanie's ability to communicatewith and converse with her readers was a real plus.
After We Fall was a well-written, emotional (from funny to sad) narrative with rich characters and a well-thought-out plot. I can recommend it to readers who like this genre.
