Linda Howard is a superbly original writer. Linda Howard writes with power, stunning sensuality and a storytelling ability unmatched in romance drama. Every book is a treasure for the reader to savor again and again."--New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen
This new collaboration between Howard and Jones weaves a moving love story into a community's journey through hardship and sacrifice. The worldbuilding in this romantic thriller clearly shows how a cataclysmic event brings these self-imposed loners, and their community, together. --Library Journal
"Linda Howard writes such beautiful love stories. Her characters are always so compelling... she never disappoints."--Julie Garwood

I loved this book. I started reading it before bed and had to stop myself at about halfway at midnight - and then spent the entire night dreaming about it lol. There are a lot of books about big, loud apocalypses but I've found myself gravitating towards the ones that focus on small communities and how they survive.
I'm also a big old romantic, so I really enjoyed the mixture of steamy romance and apocalypse shenanigans. It was very easy for me to become immersed in this novel and I'm sure I'll be thinking about it for a while.

One thing I've always liked about Linda Howard is that her characters are believable. They act and react how you yourself would when faced with a crisis. Sela stays in character, simply being what she is - a soft, quiet woman who wants to protect her family and her town.
My issue is, as stated, people are not that nice. There is an entire city full of terrified starving people not thirty miles away from a safe, self-sustained little town and only ONE person comes to check it out? And on that note, no one in that city thought to pack up their families and supplies and get the hell out of dodge before the city went under? Realistically, the roads would be full of fleeing refugees, both good people and bad just trying to find somewhere safe. After Sundown does not deliver that kind of realism and drama. Instead we get to read about canning vegetables and one man's ego being bruised.
Life as they knew it has changed, millions maybe billions of people are dead, and the most dangerous thing that happens is a small group of drug addicts try to steal some gas. And were somehow thwarted but a single woman and a 15 year old girl. Did no one think to assign guards as soon as it was announced there was gas? And on that point, why did no one check the tanks? For months?
The premise of the story is brilliant, SO much could have been done with the idea. But what was delivered is a disappointment. To put it blunty, After Sundown is like buying a ticket to see the most hyped up action movie of the decade, then being loc!ed in the theatre and being forced to watch a full cooking show instead. With someone making a loud noise every now and then to keep you awake.
Makes you think too tht something like this could really happen. The characters had depth and were beleivable.
