A TOTAL DUD29 August 2019 - Published on Amazon.com
I can't imagine anyone - school kids included - actually liking this dud of a movie. Instead of having been paid the screenwriter should have been sued for what he did to Sid Fleischman's terrific story with its long cast of memorable characters. Read Sid's young adult novel and you'll find that nearly all of his characters have been deleted and in their place you have a bunch of dull cartoonish (and badly acted) stock figures. The humor, the warmth of the relationship that is developed between Jack and Praiseworthy (there is no Griffin in the novel), the constant surprises as the story unfolds, Praiseworthy's upbeat personality - nothing can defeat this wonderful butler - and his love for Jack's aunt (not Jack's sister, which is the case in the film, and his two sisters have ceased to exist) are what make the novel worth reading. Believe me, I'm being generous by giving this turkey one star. Disney likes to remake old movies. This one needs a remake with me writing the screenplay because I would tell the same story that's in the novel and I would keep Sid Fleischman's characters, including Good Luck, the pig that Jack saves from the cook on board the LADY WILMA.
My Students LOVED This!9 June 2017 - Published on Amazon.com
My fourth grade students LOVED this after reading By The Great Horn Spoon. It is only loosely based on the book but that leads to a good discussion. I was worried about modern kids and a movie without massive special effects but it held their attention and they wanted to watch it again. And I enjoyed watching a movie I once saw on Sunday night as a kid.

If you loved the book this might not be the movie for you!16 June 2017 - Published on Amazon.com
My kids ages 9,7 and 5 loved the book "By the Great Horn Spoon" they couldn't get enough of it! I thought showing them this movie would be fun even though I warned them it likely wasn't the same or wouldn't be as good. WOW, this movie really only loosely follows the book and to it's detriment. Half way through my oldest son wanted to turn it off because it was ruining the book for him! I suppose if you're not familiar with the book you'll be fine but if you loved the book as our family did, this is a poor rendition.

Fun for a Disney Fan (and Roddy fans too)5 September 2017 - Published on Amazon.com
I'm a big Roddy McDowall fan and this movie has got to be my favorite. I had never heard of it before I first saw it many years ago on Vault Disney, but as I've tried to watch whatever he's done, there was no way I wouldn't. It is a fun, funny, family film and gives you little bit of "history" of the California Gold Rush and how San Francisco came to be. It has the same great spirit that many of the films that were made at that time had, a wonderful Disney quality. I hope you like it as much as I do.

I love Old Disney31 July 2019 - Published on Amazon.com
Too bad they don't make movies like this anymore. Know anything about fisticuffs or the gentlemen's rules of fighting? You'll love this movie! A boy runs away and his butler chases after him, but they both accidentally end up bound to California from Boston on a hunt for gold. They meet a professor Higgins who is more than he seems. Fun and funny, I love this movie!
