This is a short, fun read. Because of my own background in the theatre business as a stage performer, this story was interesting. There was an air of the old fashioned in the narration, loosely reminding me of Arthur & George by Julian Barnes. Reason being that the tale is about two people (actors) and their own personal career paths, which differ.
Like Mr. Whitehead's other short story "Home for the Weekend", this tale could also be delved into further and extended. I should think that lots of readers would be interested in the life and journey of an actor, whether failed or famous – it matters not.
Although it has plenty of humour, this tale is also a poignant one.
A What If story, with themes about Providence, Consequence, Fame, loss of Fame and missed opportunities. It shows that the choices we make affects everything and more importantly, everyone around us. It is classically shaped in three chapters: Beginning, Middle and End and to good effect.
