Book Description
About the Author
Anne started her first novel while backpacking solo around the world. Originally published by Harlequin Books, she now writes Regency-era historical romances for Berkley (Penguin USA) and Penguin Australia, but instead of her new career taking her back to exotic overseas locations, she turned into a cave-bound writer-hermit.
Anne is a former president of Romance Writers of Australia. She lives in Melbourne in a small, elderly wooden house, but she's too busy writing to renovate. Anne's books are published in sixteen languages, have been shortlisted five times for the prestigious RITA award (USA), have twice won the Romantic Book of the Year (Australia) and the National Reader's Choice Award (USA), and have been listed in Library Journal and NPR's (USA) best books of the year.

With five young siblings to bring up, the last thing Maddy Woodford needs is more work. Yet when she sees the stranger fall, all she cares about is getting him inside. What's a reputation worth, after all, when a man's life is at stake? And such a very handsome man he is too. Practical Maddy knows just how to care for him, except the only bed for him to sleep in is hers, and it's too cold for her to sleep on the floor. Still, he is sick, so she's just looking after him. Really.
As innocently as things may start out, before long everything changes, and soon the mysterious stranger's forgotten identity is the least of their worries.
The DEVIL RIDERS series ( The Stolen Princess , His Captive Lady , To Catch a Bride ) takes a break before Luke's tale with this spin-off. Nash appeared in the first two books, and is another of the handsome Renfrew brothers, with plenty of scars as a result of his parents' tempestuous marriage. So while he might be a silver-tongued diplomat, renown for his poise and charm, the last thing he wants to do is fall in love.
Yet Maddy, in true Gracie style, is a loyal, loving heroine, full of courage and honour. She's hard-working and sensible, and utterly unable to resist Nash. Even when he is high-handed, aristocratic and hard-headly male. He's also gallant, tender and good with the children. Theirs is a sweet romance, grounded in all things good, and passionate too.
There's a welcome return from several characters - the indomitable Aunt Maude; lovely Nell and her spaniel Freckles; mysterious Marcus, the brother earl, who has to get his own story one day; fallen angel Luke Ripton, the last unmarried Devil Rider; and brief appearances and mentions from many others. For those new to the series, there are plenty of new people to get to know, not least Maddy's wonderful siblings, especially little Lucy. Altogether, they create a wonderful sense of community and family, which always play such important roles in Gracie's stories.
There is something thoroughly enjoyable and comforting about Gracie's stories. Bad things do happen, but mostly they're in the past and her characters are moving forward. This is no different. With echoes of her novella - The Virtuous Widow - the romance is tender and sweet, but not lacking in passion, there's plenty of gentle humour and the characters are marvellous. I love Anne Gracie books, and I know I'll be reading this again and again.
