1.0 out of 5 stars Severely disappointing 18 January 2014

this book had a lot of potential but lacked substance. there was no transitions between characters often going from let's ask him, strait to him answering. there is no flow to the book. it's like the author wrote the whole thing in a weekend, then sent it in to be published. everything is so simple and black and white. the characters are all over the place going from just meeting to long time lovers in a couple paragraphs. there are no descriptions used for any magic. I mean the main character literally pricked his finger drops some blood on a skeleton says a nursery rhyme and summons a ice Dragon to turn away a invading army in one page of righting.

Juvenile writing. No real build up or character development, just jumps right in with action. As the book goes on, it jumps from one event to the next without any rhyme or reason, though I believe this book itself is meant to be the character development. Hard to follow at times, just going from event to event without explaining what the characters are doing. Surprised to see a 5 star rating for this book as I'm being generous with a 2. Will read the second book to see if it's any better but it seems to me that the person who wrote the book just graduate high school; reads like something I wrote in the seventh grade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy for All Ages 11 February 2014
By Cynthia Harrison - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I absolutely loved the first book in this Fantasy series, suitable for all ages. This world is special, and Kollar takes care to develop his characters who then spin the plot in a strange yet familiar world. The main characters are young, the boy, Mik, defeats an ice dragon before he has a clue how to use his unique gifts. Mik and Sura are just coming into their powers under the tutelage of Bailar, a wise elder. Bailar sees that Mik's powers are stronger than most. With Bailar's guidance, Mik and Sura harness their abilities to fight the powerful evil in their world that would see all magic destroyed. They are called upon to defeat a powerful foe at a gathering of super naturals. Will these young people and their mentor be able to survive this grave and dangerous test? Koller concludes this episode to readers' satisfaction, while also setting up new complications for Book 2. I'm ready and you will be too.

3.0 out of 5 stars YA fantasy with very basic magic system 30 December 2014

An enjoyable YA fantasy with mostly likable characters. The magic system is so basic it's a laugh, but it's a fun story that I think most will enjoy on a slow Saturday. Let's see, I bring up my fire magic, concentrate on what I want, and Poof!, it's done. No, it doesn't get any more complex in later books either.

Just a warning, the relationship between the 2 young heroes is way overdone. It's not sexual, but it's so loving that's it's sickening. It had me wondering if Larry Kollar ever had a relationship as a teen or not.
