Katherine ("Kit") doesn't need a man (though she likes having one around for sexy-times!). She's self-sufficient, whether it be changing a tire or fixing an appliance. She's got no interest in tying herself to just one man, and potentially ending up way too reliant on someone who might let her down.
Brian is in the opposite place in his life. He's been playing the field for years, and now he's ready to find the right woman and settle down, for life.
Can you see the conflict coming? ;-) It might sound predictable, but that's one of the reasons "An Accidental Gentleman" works so well. Because both of these characters are multi-dimensional, complex and interesting. Their interactions feel real, and honest, and they absolutely tug at your emotions. I can totally imagine hanging out with Kit, watching her push back against an eager suitor. And Brian - ahhhh, Brian. He's the kind of fabulous guy you want to meet *right* when Kit does. When he's finally willing to limit himself to one, super-lucky woman.
(And btw, the sex between these two is sooooo hot. Just sayin'. If you're reading An Accidental Gentleman during this hot August weather, sit in front of a fan!!)
Personally, I'm tired of damaged heroines who need saving. And I'm just as tired of damaged heroes who get saved by women. Brian and Kit don't *need* each other - until they do. Until they realize they've found something in each other that they didn't even know they'd been missing. And it makes for a wonderful story. :-)
Angsty and deep, this romance is filled with the beautiful turns of phrase that make Barber's writing stand out. Her descriptions of places, people, and emotions straddle the line between genre fiction and literary. Her talent with words is incredible.
And the story is just delightful. Kitt comes off tough as nails, but there's a little girl inside her that just wants love, unconditional and worthy of hard work and the fix-it spirit she beings to work every day as a repairman.
Brian is a computer guy with a desk job, and at first "boring good guy" is all she sees when she looks at him, but when he crowds her space and shows her who he really is, he proves he can be the perfect companion for her, someone worth keeping around instead of using for one night.
I would definitely recommend this both and the first one of the series even though you don't have to read both to follow the stories, they can stand alone.
