Robinson writes a fast paced believable thriller as always and we have the added bonus of a bit of "love" between Winsome and one of the "suspects" who turns out to be a good guy as you would imagine. Good read but why does Robinson always portray Yorkshire as being soooooo bleak. It is sometimes but not always Peter!!

Something has happened to Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks series. Abattoir Blues, the 22nd outing in the sequence, feels like a lazy entry into what, at times, has been a generally very well-written series of stories. The plotting seems pedestrian, the characters acting like teenagers in love for the most part, and Banks himself seems adrift. The story - what there is of it - involves the theft of a tractor, a gruesome murder, bad weather, an inevitable trip down to London for Banks at some stage of the book, and a finale set in snowy dales and caves. It's a very uneven book, and at times feels like it hasn't been written by Robinson, who is capable of much better than this. The "professional" review quotes from people in the media world - ( who have probably not read Abattoir Blues ) - that accompany the book seem to refer to another title completely - this one is borderline dross.

This is one of his novels that starts with a few minorish events. A stolen tractor and a lorry crash with Banks off on holiday.

We now have 5 regular characters in support of Banks although Madame Gervaise is always tied down to her office while Gerry and Doug are still to develop fully. But this widens the story telling well. Winsome in love? Annie on the mend? And those diverse elements become a single intertwined investigation.

But..... he brings in Dirty Dick Burgess again. His involvement seems tenuous but draws a significant part of the story to a largely abbreviated conclusion albeit we have a threat to Winsomes life and a chase while she runs for her life.

Hence a whimper and navel gazing. No sign of promoting him from last story and Nowak seen briefly with rank of DS.

3 and three quarter stars for the writing.

This is another very good read.
I was born in Leeds, I know the dales.
DCI Banks lives,I think, in Grantly where a friend was head teacher of the Primary School
I was in the Leeds City Police then The West Yorkshire Constabulary.
Of my 28 years service 20 were concerned with the investigation of deaths in all forms and included 3 years attached to the Forensic Science laboritories, first at Harrogate then at Wetherby. I was involved in the investigation of most of the so called Ripper murders.
These DCI Banks books are the first fictionalized murder stories I have been able to read.
Peter Robinson certainly tells it just like it is, I am only sad that I have now read nearly all of them.

As usual I was engrossed in the Crime story but yet again we are being swamped by information regarding DCI Banks/or the authors love of music. Over the 22 books in the series the reference to music is becoming harder to ignore. I skip over those sections as I have no knowledge of the type of music enjoyed and find there is actually less crime story to read because of it. I cannot believe any detective in real life would be so obsessed.

I really don't like the TV series and bought this in a weak moment to read on holiday. Having bought it I let it lie without reading until last week. I should have read this on holiday for it is extremely good. Engrossing, well written, believable characters (Banks is much nicer in the book that that idiot portrayal on TV) and a great deal of credible excitement. The touch of romance with Winsome and Gilchrist was lovely. Good read
