The darkest hour draws near. . . .
As Candy Quackenbush travels through the magical islands of Abarat and across the Sea of Izabella, horror looms on the horizon. But how can Candy hide when trouble finds her wherever she goes?
She soon discovers a secret plot, masterminded by the diabolical Mater Motley, who is obsessed with becoming the Empress of the Islands. Her method is simple.
She will darken the skies. She will obliterate the suns, moons, and stars.
She will bring Absolute Midnight.

In the third book of Clive Barker's Abarat story arc events come to a climax as Mater Motely, a terrible witch with a dress sewn from the dead and souls trapped in the dolls tied at her waist, comes to power and releases the Sacbrood blotting out the light of the sun and stars over the Abarat archipelago and allowing the monsters deep below the sea of Izabella and in the secret places of the islands to rise. Terror reigns and Barker's beautifully characterised band of rebels fight alongside the human Candy Quackenbush from our world and much is not as it seems.
It is always worthwhile buying the Abarat books in their hardback formats rather than waiting for the paperback because these weighty tomes are illustrated with Barker's own paintings, startling frightening pieces of art of great beauty and power in their own right.
I'm a huge Barker van and at first thought this series a little tame.... but then i read the first and second book to my then 10 year old daughter...she was hooked from the start and insisted reading the 3rd book by herself....praise indeed.
