In the USA alone there will be over 230,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in 2014 and more than 30,000 men will die from the disease. Prostate cancer is not to be taken likely. From the time of the initial diagnosis each patient starts a very personal story. Most of these journeys have been made many times before and this brings comfort in the knowledge that we are not alone. Alan Lawrenson’s book is about one of those journeys. It is remarkable in as much as the writer had a scientific background that allowed him to research many of the treatment models that are available. There is no single perfect treatment. But is important that each patient finds the treatment that bests suits their condition. Unfortunately, the medical advice is not always wide ranging, up to date and appropriate. Certain treatments suffer from higher than talked about reoccurrence rates, especially for the one in seven patients with aggressive cancer. So research is essential.
The book An ABC of Prostate Cancer, presents a number of the most common treatment types in a language that a layman can understand. Research is ongoing and after a ten year lull, more scientific and successful treatment methods are emerging in 2014/2015. Many of the hundreds of books in the Prostrate Cancer sub-genre deal with single solutions. Many recommend treatments that are now out of date. After reading Alan’s book, you’ll have a better idea about the range of treatments that are available now. More importantly, after reading this book, you’ll be better equipped to ask your doctor or specialist questions about the treatment that they are recommending. Choosing the right treatment could be vital for your survival.
This is a well presented book about your choices. In parts it is a little technical and it has a reference section with a number of useful web-sites. I believe that it is a useful companion on the journey of finding the best treatment for your prostate cancer. My own prostate cancer journey started ten years ago and I wish that I’d had access to the material in the book then. The book is written by my brother and contains some background on my own outcome.
Good luck on your personal journey.
